Have you looked at Accelerated Reader? Still uses whole books but has quizzes. It could supplement a program and allow you to assign reading that is meaty and "living."

Is there a special website for using accelerated as a homeschooler? I went on their website and I could only find information for schools. This sounds like something that would be good for my 11 year old son but I can't spend hundreds of dollars.

I've tried library books. I'm just going to find a reading program and work through it with him. Any suggestions? He's bright, just lazy. k

Lightning Literature 7 is pretty gentle.

Or you could just do a couple of Progeny Press type guides with him over the year, and the rest of the time just assign a chapter a day in a book you want him to read. That's what my son did in 7th. Some of the books I assigned were super-easy but valuable in some way, and others were more of a challenge. For the challenging ones, I read the first chapter aloud to draw him into the style.
