ChristusG
I got my DD's some sweaters a few days ago because they needed some more warm weather clothing. I noticed that the tag said "wash before wearing." Well, I didn't have time to do that so I googled exactly WHY it needed to be washed before wearing. Of course it came up with the fact that it could contain chemicals or dyes that could get onto the skin. But what shocked me is that it said that formaldehyde is used to treat some clothes so that they do not mildew during shipping. :001_huh::001_huh::001_huh: I don't want formaldehyde on my family's skin! I think we'll just start going naked. ;)
Daisy
Yikes. I have to wash EVERYTHING before my daughter wears it. She breaks out in horrible rashes if I don't. I wonder what chemical it is that does it?
Carol in Cal.
I know that's true for deep blue indigo jeans (like from Limited, too).
Avila
My friend in high school worked at a mall clothing store, and she used to have to wear gloves to unpack and fold the clothes because she kept getting rashes from whatever was on them. I have washed everything new before I wear it ever since.
stripe
I wash everything before wearing. Most clothes have traveled a long way, too, and I don't like that crispy feeling.
nmoira
But what shocked me is that it said that formaldehyde is used to treat some clothes so that they do not mildew during shipping.Cloth materials are also routinely sprayed with pesticides prior to shipping. lionfamily1999
Dh always said that's why new clothes smelled. Sheets too. Sheets. Death shrouds? He really creeped me out with that little tid bit. Formaldahyde... on... your... sheets.
AngieW in Texas
My 16yo hates trying on new clothes. She always gets horribly itchy and has to take a shower again as soon as we get home. I always wash our clothes before we wear them for the first time.
Carol in Cal.
No more of this nonsense. The clothes are already shrunk to the size they will stay. They are formaldehyde free. And best of all, they are CHEAP!
The Governess
I usually don't follow those rules, but I broke out in a rash after wearing a shirt this summer that hadn't been washed, and dd5 broke out all over from a Tinkerbell nightgown and it lasted for 3 days. :001_huh:
katemary63
I wash everything before wearing. Most clothes have traveled a long way, too, and I don't like that crispy feeling. Always. Everything. I hate the feel of sizing.
Hillary in KS
I've always washed clothes before I wear them, but not really because of chemicals. I've been more concerned about the hygiene habits of people who may have tried the items on before I bought them! :ack2:
ChristusG
Wow, I didn't realize that so many people washed their clothes before wearing....I never have. But after reading up about the chemicals sprayed on them, I'll be washing from now on! Yikes!!!
joannqn
I find this all terribly interesting. I have really sensitive skin, though, I've never had a problem from brand new clothes and usually wear them before I wash them. Now, wearing washed clothes is much more of a problem, which those who've read recently threads I've started will know. Thrift stores are the WORST! Most people use laundry soap I'm allergic to, and the smell in the stores makes me nauseous and gives me a horrible headache. I've bought thrift store items that I was never able to get the previous owner's perfume scent off enough to be able to wear them.
