ereks mom
Apparently the Nestle company owns 85% of the nation's pumpkin that is produced for canning, and they've stated that because of a too-wet growing season, much of this year's pumpkin crop was lost. They expect to be out of canned pumpkin to ship to grocers before Thanksgiving, and will not be able to ship more until next year's harvest begins in August 2010. Usually, canned pumpkin goes on sale just before the holidays, but all of the stores around here are selling it for full price. I bought 4 cans yesterday, and there weren't many cans left. stripe
I saw it on Yahoo news. I say - use another squash or, better yet, sweet potatoes. Pumpkin pie is overrated in my opinion. Sorry.
Sorbie
I was just at Publix and they were completely out of canned pumpkin. The manager said he didn't know if they would get more in before Thanksgiving. :willy_nilly:I guess we will be having banana pudding instead. Macrina
Better yet, buy a whole pumpkin from your local farmers. They still have 'em, they're better for you and it's better for your local economy. :)
Krista in LA
I guess I'm glad that my dd told me she was going to make sweet potato pie instead of pumpkin this year. I'd be one of those people running around the day before trying to find a can of pumpkin otherwise.
gingersmom
My food store runs out of canned pumpkin every year. Sweet potato pie is delicious and tastes just like pumpkin pie.
elise1mds
I've got two pumpkins sitting on my counter just waiting to be turned into pies... :D I'm a horrible pie snob, though.

They still have 'em, they're better for you and it's better for your local economy. :) Ding, ding! You took the words right out of my mouth! Nicole (who is somewhat sickened, but not surprised, by the news that Nestle owns / generates such a huge percentage of our canned pumpkin)

Use the whole pumpkins for soup or pancakes. Yummy!
Jean too
Well that explains why I had trouble finding any canned pumpkin at the grocery this week. I'm not a fan of pumpkin pie but I do love me some pumpkin bread.
OHGrandma
Better yet, buy a whole pumpkin from your local farmers. They still have 'em, they're better for you and it's better for your local economy. :) hmmm, I've got a couple dozen left after freezing all we'll need. I wonder what I could get for them on ebay? btw, I'm in southwestern OH, you can PM me with any bids!
imeverywoman
week. Publix has very little pumpkin left. My friend, the Publix pharmacist, bought up the 8 cans they had left and is bringing them over tomorrow. Smart man, that pharmacist. It helps that I keep him supplied with goodies on a regular basis. He'll even be having Thanksgiving dinner with us this year!
keptwoman
We don't have canned pumpkin available here so I've made a pumpkin pie with pumpkin I've cooked myself. It works great and tasted fabulous. I found it really funny that our US AFS student had from-scratch pumpkin pie for the first time in New Zealand
Dawn in OH
I stopped in Wal Mart tonight on the way home from a long day of running around and noticed they have tons of Libby's 100% Pure Pumpkin and Libby's East Pumpkin Pie Mix. I went out of my way to look just because I had heard about the pumpkin shortage.
Melissa in Australia
I can't believe people actually can pumpkin. It keeps for a year just sitting out on the veranda. They are so easy to store.
Matryoshka
Huh. I had actually been thinking there might be a pumpkin shortage because I already knew the pumpkin crop had trouble this year, but today I was in both Whole Foods and TJ's and there were tons of cans of pumpkin on the shelf. I bought one - I think I may still have some left over from last year.
angela in ohio
I thoughtmost canned pumpkin was actually squash. I read last year that they use squash instead because it has a stronger flavor. Maybe that was just a specific brand? We have a freezer full of pureed pumpkin thanks to a 3/$1 sale on pie pumpkins at the local pumpkin farm. :001_smile: I only lost two of them to target practice.
