hlee
I am reading Teaching the Trivium right now...there is definitely much in it that I find questionable and I am an evangelical Christian though probably not as conservative as the Bluedorns. Anyway, I am wondering in particular what people think of what they said about teaching grammar at a later age. Their contention that teaching grammar to children under 10 could be potentially damaging to the kids was really striking! Is there any kind of response anywhere that people know about regarding how TWTM/SWB feel about the Bluedorn's contention? (They make a similar claim about delaying mathematics, which I did find reference to on these boards elsewhere with a search.) But I was definitely a little troubled by their ideas on the dangers of teaching grammar...since I am a new homeschooler and using FLL with my 7 year old and teaching him the basic definitions of the parts of speech. But according to the Bluedorns, I am potentially wiring his brain in a way that will make it much more difficult for him to understand English grammar at a more advanced level down the road. Where does this idea come from??? I'd love to hear from anyone who has insight about this concept or who knows if SWB has ever responded to the claim. Thanks! Quad Shot Academy
I used to be torn between the WTM and TTT. I heard/read or saw somewhere that the Bluedorns recommend something like 1-2 hours of school work a day at the high school level and 6 hours a day at a job or career. I can see that possibly working in the country, but not in my geographical area. I think they follow a certain segment of the Christian HS population that believes you won't likely remain a Christian if you go to college and that Christians should work with their hands. I could be totally wrong, as it has been a while since I even thought about them. Hopefully someone else will have something better to say! :001_unsure:
Starr
We teach grammar from the early grades. No one seems harmed. :)
Denisemomof4
we start in 3rd grade and my oldest, now in ps, was sought out by his English teacher after the SAT's. She wanted to know where he got his English instruction as she knew it wasn't in the school system. My y9unger son, now in ps, is taking honors English classes. FWIW, I plan to school the girls at home until the end, but will use Rod and Staff grammar until the 9th grade and then we'll be done with all formal grammar instruction.
