gratefulmother
I am interested in buying a dollhouse kit to assemble for my dd8 for Christmas. I would love to hear from someone who has done one about how long it will take and what the difficulty level is. My parents got one for me to collect miniature furniture in, but I was a little too old for it by the time they got it. I am hoping she will really enjoy this for several years. Also, does anyone have a company they would recommend buying a dollhouse kit from? Thanks so much!
AngelaNYC
My girls were 9 and 6 when I had that same idea. I bought this awesome wooden dollhouse on ebay. It had a lot of rooms, opened up real big, the roof came off, it came with miniature wood furniture, etc. I bought little people for it. The whole thing was easily "renovate-able". I was thinking they would paint the rooms and the outside, put down new pretty flooring, decorate, hang holiday stuff inside, create elaborate dramatic play. I had such high hopes. They didn't play with it ... ever. :glare:
Angel in FL
I'm looking for a nice wood dollhouse too. I really don't like the ones that are printed to look like they have paintings, furniture, etc.
AnnetteB
We built the Dura-Craft Shenandoah Log Cabin kit for our children a few years ago. We started out with enthusiasm, set it aside for awhile, and then forged ahead and completed it. That is how we are with many projects :glare: The kit was not really that difficult to assemble and it is very sturdy. I just googled it and the kit is still being sold. Our log cabin has had several "families" inhabit it. Currently a family of bears. We had a group of Precious Moments dolls whose hair all fell out :( I think that the cabin has been a worthwhile project and the children enjoy decorating it for Christmas. jujsky
Dura-Craft and Greenleaf are both good brands. DD and I are assembling a log cabin kit for one of her Calico Critters families to live in ("They each need their own house, Mama!") but with some home remodeling projects it's been put on the back-burner. FYI: if you get a log cabin kit, make sure it has pre-milled walls and is NOT a box of little wooden pieces you have to glue together to form walls. It's not difficult, but is taking longer than I expected ;)
gratefulmother
I will check out the Greenleaf and Duracraft websites. Thank you for those suggestions. I guess it will say whether the walls are pre-milled or not? Maybe I can call and talk to their customer service dept to determine the level of skill required to make one. I hadn't thought about all of that Calico Critter furniture we have! This house will be fully decorated as soon as she gets it! Does dollhouse furniture stores have things you can buy to look like wallpaper and flooring?
AnnetteB
Our cabin's walls weren't one piece, but dh assembled them quickly side-by-side with the next wall so the spacing was perfect.
SheWillFly
My 5yo daughter was asking about building a doll house at dinner. Perfect timing.:)
Guest smithandy
My daughter was asking dollhouse furniture for her beautiful doll house, then i thought Victorian dollhouse furniture would be perfect accessories.
