Is it just the Civil War and the Alamo or is it 19th Century military conflicts?

For the Civil War....anything by McPhereson.

If 19th Century military conflicts. I find the Zulu Wars, the British in Afghanistan and the Boer War fascinating. They are less known in the States which in some way makes them more interesting.

Zulu War - "The Washing of the Spears" - Morris is the definitive work.

Boer war - "The Boer war" - Pahenham - is superb

Look at Henty, potentially a little young for a 17 year old, but I still read some of them.

Flashman Series by Fraser is about a cad, a rake and a coward who always comes out looking good. He travels the world and fights in India, the US, Madagascar, the Crimea, Afghanistan etc. Some adult themes, but nothing that would shock a 17 year old in today's world.

One can not go wrong with Kipling.
