s/o Disney Cruise information

Recommended Posts

So, the Disney cruise thread has me interested. I looked over at disboards.com, but frankly, that site has me positively overwhelmed! Information overload!

Can someone tell me what a Disney cruise is like? I'd have to do some major convincing on dh. He's not a cruise person, he doesn't think, though he has never been. He would also be concerned about H1N1 :tongue_smilie:.

Thanks!

Oh my! We just adored our cruise. Like I said before, probably one of the best times in our lives and we look forward to our next one! We had NO IDEA what cruises would be like and was a bit nervous to be stuck in one place! Ha! There was so much to do for people of all ages, my mom in her 60's, my sister (40's) and her tweens, and our 5 and 18 month old at the time! And the food, let me tell you, it was great. You don't have to be a disney fan to be on the ship. There are movies, bingo, tours, checking out the ports and entertainment that can have little to do with Disney. You can't do it all on a 4 day trip. By the time we were getting a hang of cruisin' it was time to go. We were so sad! The Disney Wonder seemed like "OUR SHIP" and I know many other people feel that way too.

The thing we like about cruising the best is that we pay for the cruise, and can just eat what we want, and enjoy the entertainment. No pulling out the wallet or purse everytime SOMEONE is hungry or wants to do something.

Castaway Cay is one of the prettiest spots this side of heaven! Its kept up so well! Of course, your food and fun are already taken care of. There is an adults only beach and a family beach. Man, I am not good with words, but I just wanted to hide out on the island while everyone was loading back onto the ship and move in. We took bikes and toured the island. Next time DH wants to do some kayaking.

Disney Cruises are more expensive than other lines, but really, for what we got, I was satisfied and I don't have the desire to try anything else. If you have any more specific questions, I'd love to help you out! Jennifer

Okay, let me start off by saying that I would be happy on any cruise ship. I'm not partial to Disney, but we had an AMAZING time!!

The reasons we like cruising in general:

Our family LOVES to travel. But, we've got varying ages of children. Planning out a vacation is very difficult as our interests vary so much. On a cruise, there's something for everyone. There was a kid's club for each age group. On the Disney cruise, they didn't make me leave my dd who wouldn't have liked it in there without an older sibling/parent. I stayed with her!

There's ALWAYS something to do - ice sculpture shows, swimming, eating, bingo, working out, eating, spa treatments, etc, etc,e tc. Did I mention eating?

We got to see four different ports including Mexico in one trip! I know we didn't really "experience" what life was like on the islands we visited, but we're giving the kids a taste of the world by cruising.

Money. Everything is paid for up front. There are a few things that are not included, but those are optional expenses.

The ocean. It was just so relaxing!!! I still get tears in my eyes when I think of eating breakfast by the window overlooking the ocean. It was just so aweinspiring to see NO land and realize how small I really am in this world.

The reason we like Disney Cruising:

We never had to worry about the shows and whether they were appropriate. Dd was a little scared by a couple of the bad guys, but we knew that about her and prepared her in advance.

There isn't a casino on board. I don't mind casinos from a moral standpoint, but it was nice not to have that element on board.

It was Disney without being overboard Disney. KWIM? The themes were definately there, but they were so tasteful! Mickey heads are everywhere - hidden well. And, then, there were the characters! Without lines!! (Well, at least not long ones) I was jogging one morning on deck 4 and Goofy joined me in a jogging outfit!! I've never had such a fun jog in my life!!! I was sitting by the pool with my dd one day watching playoff football on the big screen tv and Lilo sat on the deck chair next to ours.

My kids felt like big kids. We let the older ones have run of the ship. They got to pick their activities and just go! It was nice to see them be trustworthy in a safe environment. (Of course, we had rules for them to follow!)

When you board the ship, they announce your family over the intercom and there's a whole crew there to cheer for you with Mickey hands on! They introduced our family as, "Welcoming Princess Meg and the Kelly family on their first Disney cruise all the way from Grosse POinte Park, MI!!" Meg got a kick out of that.

The horn!!! Seriously, when they had the sail away party, and our cruise director said, "You are officially on vacation!!!!" and they played the horn, I started crying!!! I still do when I hear it!! Listen here:

Search around our other Disney videos. There are a LOT from the cruise!!

The parties!!!!! There's the sail away party. SOOOO much fun! I understand that other cruise lines don't do this as big as Disney. There's the Pirate Party. Capt Jack Sparrow takes over the ship by repelling down a smokestack and Mickey Mouse ziplines across the smokestacks and saves the ship!!! Farewell party. It's a tearjerker for sure. I know I cried!!!

Fireworks: Disney is the only cruise line to allow fireworks at sea.

Castaway Cay: We aren't beach people. But, we absolutely had a blast on CC!!! It is one of the most gorgeous places on earth. We just hung out and ate. Lots. The kids rented floats and snorkeling equipment. Dh and I sat on the beach chairs. I napped a little with Meg.

A typical day:

We had a few rules - the kids had to eat breakfast with us, dinner with us, get off the ship with us, and meet us at the required times in between. They were not allowed to run on the ship, go into others' rooms, etc, etc. So, each morning we woke up and had breakfast on the 9th deck (I think! It may have been the 10th) overlooking the ocean. We could eat whatever we wanted!

Then, if it was a day we were at port, we'd go get ready to leave the ship. We left together. The excursions we chose were: swimming with the dolphins (absolutely amazing!!), a tour of Key West, and a submarine ride (also fun, but a bit claustrophobic for me!). We were supposed to parasail together, but that was cancelled due to the wind.

On our sea days and when we came back to the ship early, we just hung out! Usually the kids went to their clubs. Meg and I would go to her club. Or, we'd get a massage (my favorite). Or, sit by the pool with a fancy drink. Or, stalk characters.

We'd get back to the ship in time to dress for dinner. We usually took showers and dressed nicely. We always ate together. Then, the older boys went their own ways. Dh, Will, Meg and I went to the shows together. That took us until 9 at night! We went to bed then. A couple nights, I stayed up later and just walked around looking out to the sea. The older boys would come in around midnight or so.

LOVED it and recommend it to everyone!!! Nobody got seasick. That was my biggest concern. My sister's son got sick and needed the ER on board. They were in her room in 20 seconds from their call. AMAZING!

Okay, we are NOT cruise people (though we've never really been; just never appealed to either DH or I) but you make this sound HEAVENLY.

Seriously....we only have our Molly who just turned 12, but this sounds like it might be fabulous!

Thanks so much for your detailed reply to the OP!

Thanks for the tip on "Trip Reports". I went over there while waiting for the kids to finish up some of their math work this AM and got overwhelmed with the number of forums! I'll check back there tonight when they are in bed!

Thanks for your response! At Castaway Cay, are the areas to kind of "get away"? You mentioned biking, so it sounds like maybe your family may be able to break from the cruise mob for a while. Yes, the being stuck in one place thing is a concern for dh!

Dh is listening. He is worried about being "on a giant floating petri dish for germs", with the H1N1 stuff :D.

Keep your stories coming. I may convince him just yet!

Consider it! It doesn't have to be a Disney cruise. But consider cruising in general. Disney just made it more magical for our family. I never thought I'd be a cruise person either! But, I'm totally a new woman!!

Thanks for your response! At Castaway Cay, are the areas to kind of "get away"? You mentioned biking, so it sounds like maybe your family may be able to break from the cruise mob for a while. Yes, the being stuck in one place thing is a concern for dh!

What do you mean by get away? Yes, biking is available. It is definately an opportunity to get away from everyone!! If you/dh don't like mobs, there's also room service! If you have a balcony room (or even a porthole) it could be a wonderful retreat! Room service is free - but you do need to tip. We did leave my oldest ds in the room one night with our napping dd. We ordered him room service and he was happier than a clam!!!

You know, even though we were "stuck" in one place, I never felt like we were truly "stuck." I'm prone to panic (note my thread on hypochondria!!), but I never felt like there wasn't somewhere to go, or something to do! Even if it was a retreat in my own stateroom.

Perhaps you should try a three day! The kids are free and it's only three days if you or your dh absolutely HATES it!!

The horn made ME cry! THANK YOU for taking the time to write such a detailed post. It all sounds so, for lack of a better word, "happy"! I feel like we could use a little bit of that right now.

Oh yes!!! Happy it was!!!! My kids can't wait until we go on our next cruise!!! Our next one is a HUGE surprise! We're going to Disney anyway in January so I can run the half marathon and the kids are running the 5K. The night we leave, we've told them we're staying at the port and going to NASA the next day at Port Canaveral. I'm going to have them put on shirts the next day that read, "My mom and dad surprised me with a Disney Cruise today!!!" Dh's and my shirts will read, "I surprised my family with a Disney Cruise today!!" I can't wait until they read them and realize that we're getting on that beautiful ship again!!!

The "giant floating petri dish for germs" thing - I get it (again - please see the hypochondria thread). If it helps - every time we went in to eat ANYTHING - they were handing out wipes for your hands. There were people in the bathrooms handing out wipes. There were wipes at the elevator. EVERYWHERE!!!! I also decided to take the attitude that if we got sick when we got home, so what!!??? We'd been on a WONDERFUL cruise!!! (And, you know what? We did get sick!! Two of my kids got the "flu" (in parenthesis because it was never confirmed) after we got home. But, we'd had a wonderful vacation and it just didn't matter!!! I don't know if they got sick because of our cruise or what. But, we had a GREAT vacation and memories to talk about for YEARS to come!!!

Oh - and if the video of the horn made you cry - just wait until you're there!!!! Honestly! I cannot WAIT to go back.

When we were biking, I think we saw a total of 8 people on the trails, we were all going in different directions so it was nice and quiet.

Let me tell you, I HATE HATE HATE lines and crowds and loudness in general. I was afraid there was going to be people all around me. I was afraid I would have to wait in lines forevery for food or entertainment! Aside of the sailaway party, or at the movies, I didn't feel crowded at all. And it wasnt bad, you expect people to be around you at the movies, and the sailaway party was alot of fun for my kids.

At Castaway Cay, we just made sure we left first thing in the morning so I could get a hammock. (I've got one in the picture of my name!) Although there were plenty of people on the beach, it did NOT seem crowded!

Yes, if you go and read some of the trip reports on the disboards, you will find some great info and good stories. I check it out everytime I get "boatsick" I mean homesick for the Disney Wonder. DH has agreed to do a 7

day, so we may be on the Magic the next time around.

We have cruised with Disney twice and loved it. We went once with my parents and our kids, and once just me dh and the kids. We are not big Disney people at all, we have been to Disney world but don't go crazy for it. We loved the cruises because in addition to all the wonderful things Jennifer in MI pointed out, you could do as little or as much as you like. You can sign up for every kid/adult/family activity or just let the kids enjoy a few activities in the kids club while you lounge at the adults only pool. It's perfect for a multi-generational or large group trip -- you can spend time all together, or everyone can do their own thing for awhile and meet up at dinner to catch up on the day. Dinners were relaxed, lots of time to talk. The shows were entertaining and family friendly. Castaway Cay, the private island, was absolutely heavenly.

We had *excellent* service both times. Can't say enough good things about it!

The only negative for us is the pool situation. My kids love to swim and their pools are small and very crowded in the afternoons. We found it better to swim in the early morning and in the late afternoon when other families were getting ready for the early dinner seating (late dinner always worked best for us). And heaven forbid some kid has an accident in the pool, then they have to close the pool down, drain, clean and refill it. (non potty trained kids are not allowed in, even with a pull-up, but there's always someone that feels they are entitled to put their not quite potty trained kid in anyway). With the new ship they are building, plans haven't been released yet but I assume there will be bigger and better pool facilities.

We did some pretty educational things too; toured Mayan ruins, Dolphin encounter, etc.

Oh and allergies -- my son has food allergies and I was very impressed with the extra care they took with his food. Making sure that things were safe for him to eat *and* something he enjoyed.

Oh yes!!! I forgot about this!! My ds also has food allergies. My nephew was with us this trip and he has food allergies as well. The first night, we met with all our servers (I have a wonderful picture of this!) and they made sure of all of the allergies at our table. My ds' allergies were fine - he could order ANYTHING off the children's menu. This NEVER happens!!! He was SOOOOO happy!!!!!

My nephew couldn't. He was allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and shellfish. The Disney cruise staff cooked him his OWN MEAL EVERY MEAL!!!! They found out that my sister and her dh cook him lamb/veal/beef and ANY kind of veggie. They cooked him his own special meal each night with those paramaters. We were SOOOO impressed. They are so willing to work with allergy kids!

My sister and I took the kitchen tour (mine is a long story - I missed it by 5 minutes and the person at the door told me I had missed it. It had been a stressful last hour (getting dd down for her nap) and I was losing it - tearing up. I told the woman there that I would be okay and just go up and look at pictures at the photography place. Well, 5 minutes later, the CHEF comes up and gets me and asks me if I'd like to join the tour!!!! YES, they STOPPED the tour to find ME!!!!!). Anyway, I learned that on the new ships they are going to have a separate kitchen for allergic people with a separate CHEF!!!! I kid you not!!! I am SOOOO impressed!!!

Worst cruise we ever went on. Long story short

1. Too many kids everywhere-but especially in the kid zones-CHAOS

2. Loudest most obnoxious mealtimes ever

3. Worst embarkation and debarkation ever (we've been on Carnival, Holland & RC)

4. More expensive than any cruise we've been on-even the Alaska cruise was cheaper!

Wow! I've cruised quite a bit (I'm sort of obsessed with cruising, actually!), but never on Disney, primarily because of the cost. I've always wanted to, though, and yours is the first post I've ever read that painted it in a negative light.

I'm not discounting your experience at all, just saying that I'm really sorry you had a bad time, particularly considering all the money you spent!

so how much does a disney cruise cost? Say, for a family of four, two adults, two young children? This sounds amazing!!! Just give me a ball-park figure.

Definately give Disney a call. Right now they are running a kids sail free promo!!! We're booked on a 3 day for 2000 and a 4 day for 2400. This is for a family of 6 and we have two staterooms and you'd only need one. It'd be MUCH cheaper for you!!

It's definately not for everyone!!! Yup - there are a lot of kids and the areas with the kids are loud. Thank goodness there are choices of cruise lines!

Which Alaska trip did you take? We're looking at AK cruises for 2011. Disney will be there, but they aren't doing a land portion to Denali or the Arctic Circle. I want to do both.

No problem. Go on cruise.com and you'll read plenty of other unhappy customers. And of course, we tried to make the best of things. Just wasn't our style.

We did Holland to AK. My parents picked the cruise line that time. Holland was o.k., but I much prefer Royal Caribbean. I'm interested in trying Princess because a few friends rave about them. I will say that my parents really did enjoy it (Holland). But, it was a little mature for dh and I. (evening entertainment=John Denver impersonator)

Holland is memorable for their embarkation & debarkation. We literally got off the bus, walked straight to check in and straight to an agent, walked straight onto the ship and straight to the buffet. Shocking! Not one line. We didn't even wait behind one person.

AK was great! We did not do Denali, but we did do a week cruise. We went from Anchorage (Seward) to Vancouver. I loved Juneau! My dh and dad's all-time favorite excursion ever was a helicopter trip to a glacier where they got to ice-climb up the glacier. They raved about it.

Watch out for mosquito hatching season. If you go to AK too soon, the mosquitos are (apparently) really bad. Maybe a native AKer could speak to this. We went mid-July and had no problems.

Also-if you can, get a balcony. I spent more time outside looking at the scenery than on any other trip. Breathtaking.

Of all the places I've ever been, I'd most like to go back to AK.

I haven't booked my Alaska cruise yet, either! It's definitely not going to be in 2010 now, and Alaska Cruise 2011 is fighting a really tight battle with Med Cruise 2011! I just cannot decide. And this is so not a bad problem to have. :D

Hey! Our Alaska cruise of 2010 became the AK cruise of 2011 when a cousin decided to get married in August of 2010. We have to travel quite a distance for that, so we're putting off our cruise. Trouble is, we were going to go to Europe in the summer of 2011. So, now we're debating whether we go to Alaska in August 2011 and then Europe in Sept 2011. Or put off Europe until 2012. Yup - it's a nice "problem" to have!!!!

Which med cruise are you looking at? We were looking to do a month in Europe doing a cruise or two - hopefully a Baltic cruise and a Med cruise with time inbetween in France, Italy and England.

Our AK cruise will probably be Princess. They have a land/sea trip that looks amazing!!

In a hurry - have not read through all responses but my sister went on a Disney Cruise and came back with NOTHING but praise. She said it was The Best Vacation Ever. She, and many family members, immediately booked their next cruise making monthly payments.

She makes regular plans now with Disney Cruise she loves it that much (do I sound like a sales person :) )

I really want to try it, but it starts getting expensive w/ 5 kids ( you have to rent 2 rooms). Maybe someday.
