I'm going to ask for a tiny camera for Christmas. Which one do I want?

Recommended Posts

I want:

  • point & shoot (not SLR)
  • very small size (must fit easily in my purse or a pocket)
  • at least 5 megapixels (prefer 8 or more)
  • image stabilization (IS)
  • video capability
  • proportionally large LCD screen
  • a good brand such as Canon (preferred) or Nikon, but would consider others
  • as much optical zoom as I can get for around $200

Suggestions??

Here's the one I have (but I paid a lot more for it several years ago!). I love the touch screen because I can see it better than tiny little buttons with tiny print, and a Zeiss lens was just icing on the cake! It goes easily into my jean's pocket or purse. I've not had any problems with it. I bought an extra battery so that I always have it charged. I'm sure there are lots to choose from, but when I was looking, this one met all my requirements.

I don't have a specific brand recommendation, but we have an Olympus Tough 6000 as our secondary camera (main is DSLR) and I have to say I love the fact that it's drop and waterproof. We can take it in the boat and to the beach with no worries at all. I can give it to the kids without worrying about them damaging it. It's small enough for my bag and pocket, it has 10MP but I'm not sure about IS to be honest. The shutter lag on it isn't great so it's not necessarily the camera I'd recommend but I'd seriously consider drop/waterproof in your list of features.

We have a Canon Powershot SD750 and love it. It takes good pictures (and bad ones, but that is because I'm terrible at getting pictures framed properly [grin]). Actually, it is our 3rd Canon. (I dropped and broke the second one). My husband wanted one that would fit in his shirt pocket. Big fan.
