Cera
I'm looking for the old style readers. Something on a first grade level with lots of short stories bound into a book so that we can just sit down and knock out a story each day after phonics. We are secular homeschoolers. Cera
I may have answered my own question...McGuffey readers? (I started on WTM and followed the links for "people who bought this item also bought" on Amazon).

Chris in VA
You could check out used book stores or even amazon for old copies of school texts, from publishers like Harcourt Brace Janvanovich or Macmillian.
Haiku
If you go to books.google.com and search for "first reader" you will find a wealth of resources. It wouldn't cost much to have them printed and bound at Kinko's. Tara
Mom-ninja.
I bought the McGuffey books from Amazon. So far I like them. As for secular there may be just a few stories you might want to skip though not many.
amsunshine
We liked both the Elson Readers and the Free and Treadwell readers.

3byzaz
My sons have all loved Pathway Readers. They are Amish/Mennonite type stories...very wholesome. My youngest has finally started WANTING to read, but only these. He loves them and begs to read them - nothing else though!! The CLE hardback readers also sound like they would meet your criteria. Aurelia
We have been using the McGuffey Primer and there is some religious content, but the stories are short and are good practice. I like them much better than books about Spongebob or Care Bears. :ack2:

LindaOz
My sons have all loved Pathway Readers. They are Amish/Mennonite type stories...very wholesome. My youngest has finally started WANTING to read, but only these. He loves them and begs to read them - nothing else though!! My younger daughters really like these too. They are interesting stories about family and everyday life so the kids can probably relate to them.

ezrabean2005
McGuffey's have been great for us. As others have mentioned, you may want to skip a couple of stories for secular use. BTW, you can also see / print the McGuffey readers for free through Google Books or Project Gutenberg to check them out.
