Have any of your parents needed your SSN for a will or living trust, beneficiary type thing? DH and I are kinda relunctant to give out that information. I just kinda want to know if that is normal before I start forking over my identity.

I can't imagine being reluctant to give my parents my SSN. Of course, they're the ones who *applied* for it and had the original card in their possession for years and years. ;)

I had to give mine to my dad for his life insurance beneficiary information and some joint bank account situation.

I would however, ask them what it is for. My Dad I trust. My mother on the other hand would not put it to honest use......

Both my dh and I have been asked for our SSNs by our parents. It has always been for beneficiary purposes for life insurance, 401K, etc. I just can't remember specifically what it was. I think it is fairly normal though.

It isn't that I don't trust my parents! I just want to make sure they aren't getting asked for something that is unnecessary. They can be gullible at times or maybe a better word is innocent??

I'm with Abbey on this one, though I can certainly understand that there may be concerns with some parents. My mom, well, she's pretty trustable. ;)

Why they need it. Both dh and my parents have had to ask for ours.

My dad recently opened a new money market acct, and put my name on it as a joint holder (he has done the same w/ my siblings), that way when he passes, we are direct beneficiaries, and won't have to worry about inheritance taxes, etc.

My parents asked us for ours and they live in Canada. Once a year they take money out of a family trust to help pay for our kids' activities and so they need it because we pay taxes here and it's taxed. Thankfully, it's always a small enough amount that we don't have to include it (it goes by how much you pay in taxes in Canada.)
