Strawberry Queen Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I'm looking at my options going into SOTW 3. I have option 1) take a year off and do Canadian history for whole year-wait 4 more years until we do it again. 2) fold Canadian history in alongside SOTW 3 and 4-taking a few weeks to focus on specific Canadian stuff when necessary. What do you think? How does this work for those doing American history? Do you just take time and look into events in greater depth, or do you just do a survey? As you can tell I'm having a hard time deciding which way to go. Any advice would be wonderful.:) Quote
nmoira Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I can tell you how I'm intending to do it. My dad was English and raised in Scotland, I'm Canadian and we live in the US. I'm integrating extra UK, Canadian and US history into the first 4 year cycle, taking extra time and making extra lessons where necessary. Co-ordinating resources will be the most time consuming part, but once everything is integrated, it there shouldn't be any additional prep work (Laura in China did most of the work for me this cycle -- I already the texts she used). After that I'll do the same, but am planning to add discrete blocks of North American history. Quote
Suzanne in ABQ Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 We "hit the Pause button" in SOTW to delve more deeply into American History topics. For instance, we're currently doing SOTW 4, in which there is only one chapter devoted to the American Civil War. We will likely spend several weeks in this chapter, before moving on. Quote
ArwenA Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 DD9 and 6 began SOTW 4 this year and we're having a bad time. We switched over to Canadian history and are having a great time. We started studying the Haida today and DD6 has our trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands all planned out (we aren't going anytime soon). DD12, DS10 and DD7 who recently joined the family are doing SOTW 3 and are learning about the American Revolution. We discussed how the American Revolution affected Canadian history and I found it fascinating to hear their ideas. I always try to find Canadian books to read. Dear Canada and Our Canadian Girl have been very popular here. Okay, I haven't answered you're question.:) I've done two different things and both are going well. I wouldn't have taken a year off from SOTW if we hadn't been unhappy. I would have just integrated Canadian history into our world history studies like with those doing SOTW. There's no right answer.
