CalicoKat Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I have kids sleeping on mattresses on the floor. I went last night to buy a trundle bed but I wonder if they're going to stand up to the daily/nighly use (abuse) of my very active ADHD child(ren)? Any thoughts? Shortly I'll have to add another kid to the girls room. The baby's crib is in our room and she'll be 1 in May. Right now the room barely holds 2 twins in an L-shape. I've also got to figure out how to put 3 dressers in this room . . . but if I can get the sleeping arrangements in order then perhaps the dressers will follow. Also am I stupid to consider this bunkbed for my boys (5 & 2)? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10123996 You can also put another mattress on the floor underneath it--so it's a shorter bunkbed. Like in this link. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/rooms/childrens_room/ I've always heard and respected no bunkbeds for little boys under age 5. But this one is low (and has a canopy) jumpers won't be too high. Actually they're jumping off their dressers now so it's really not going to be a height they haven't already, daily, accomplish safely. :) I may be just going crazy with trying to organize us into these small bedrooms. 5kidsforME Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 We had a trundle bed for 4 years and our visiting family would use it then our children used it for 2 straight years and we never had a problem with it. We bought ours from a local mattress store. Megan Quote
Georgie Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Sorry I don't have advice on the trundle, but have you tried buying a closet organizer? Walmart used to have one made by Rubbermade. I installed it myself, so I don't think it was difficult to install. You can adjust the heights of the hanging bars, so the kids can reach, plus the shelves are also adjustable. We use this instead of a dresser, which leaves a lot more space in the room. Quote
Harriet Vane Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I have friends who used a homemade trundle for years with their girls. It was just a low platform on wheels. They were REALLY strict about putting the trundle away everyday. They still use it for overnight guests. My uncle has used the low bunks from IKEA for years now--one for the boys' room and one for the girls' room. The littler boy/girl sleep on a mattress on the floor under the bunk. It has worked really well for them, and it has held up well. Quote
Brenda in FL Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 We used a trundle for our kids daily for about 5 years - it was second hand to us. It has just now become broken - probably because one of them had jumped to many times!! SOmehow the point where the metal is welded has broken. If you get a pop up trundle - you will want one with a wire grid - not a hammock. The hammock will eventually stretch and will not provide the right support for your mattress. Having the trundle was a great space saver in the room. We have one of those racks with plastic bins right by the bed. We slide that out of the way each night to pull out the bed. That way we didn't have to give up the storage space along that wall and its easier to move tham a dresser or toy box. Also - with a pop-up trundle - just be careful to put it down in the morning and make sure the kids never crawl under it. I was always a little afraid that someone could get caught under it, if it collapsed. But it never did. Quote

Our builder has said they'll work with us until the end of April. At that point finances will no longer be there for building our new house. Perhaps at the end of April I can "install" things. Quote
CalicoKat Posted March 12, 2008 Author Posted March 12, 2008 I did think about getting it for both sets of kids. One of my dd's is really picky about sleeping "under" her older sis. She hates the idea. I thought if I got the canopy and put her on the top bunk perhaps I might be able to get it to be acceptable for both kids. Anyhoo... did the canopy (if they used it) hold us to kid use? Thanks Strider Quote
