If you were to schedule in extra chores, when would you do it?

Recommended Posts

I'm working out our schedule for next year. Years ago, when we cleaned our house on our own (we were spoiled for a time with a housekeeper), we did one job per day (ie: dusted or cleaned windows or ???). Back then it was easy to do because my children were younger and had shorter school days. For those of you like us now with longer school days, when do you assign such chores? Do you tack it onto your morning routine? After lunch? Or after school? What works best in your home and why?

Just hoping that hearing someone else's perspective will help me solidify an opinion of what will work best in our home...

I want the main household chores done by 9am. My kids start their schoolwork when they feel like it so the majority of the time, chores are basically a school break. We then do a quick cleanup about 3/4pm (before daddy gets home).

At least this is how it has been done for YEARS. Now? We have the school so I'll want it done before parents get here. And hubby isn't working outside the home. So we may have some figuring to do.

Right now, since hubby lost job, we're constantly "weekend messy" and it's driving me batty.

we all do the chores here, i have an army of 5! the way i do it, each kid has an area - kitchen, bath, living room - and it's their job to keep that room clean. 2x a week we do a deeper clean (sat a.m. is one), the other days we do a 'quick clean'. i made a laminated chart to stick behind the door in each room that has specific steps about how to get that room clean. (1. pick up things that don't belong) we do this before breakfast most mornings - that's my motivator - they're hungry and generally do the job quickly. this way the house is tidy before we start school. we also do a quick clean (we call it 20 pick up) every evening before daddy comes home - everyone just runs around decluttering. other jobs like washing windows get done without regularity but often enough to suit me. they would be a consequence of bad behavior or a way to earn some spending money.

e.t.a. if i did the work myself i wouldn't have time to teach! and my 12 and 10 yo do almost as well as i do.

My kids tackle chores best right before dinner.

Interesting, I wonder why that would be? I hadn't considered this time of day, but like other posters said it's when we do our quick pick-up before Daddy gets home and you're right, everyone is oddly efficient then.

I'll have to give this some thought. I want a time when my children are at their best more than me because we get more done as a team than myself alone.

This is a "whatever works" type of answer.

Before school if it helps to get the body moving.

In between two toughie subjects if the student needs a little mental break.

After lunch, if they need to let their tummy rest for a few minutes.

Right after returning from an activity (piano lesson, parkday, etc.) if the "transition" of chore helps getting student back on homework.

Just "before" leaving for the errand/activity, if the student seems to "stop early because we have to leave soon" and wouldn't do any school then anyway or would just dawdle.

Just whatever happens to work that season, and then we might change it around if something else works
