KatieJ Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 hey there. My 21 yr old son, who does not have insurance..has been having some ear problems. We all went swimming at the neighbor's pool last week. He was under water quite a bit and we assume got water in his ear. Several days later, we were all at a lake swimming. He had gone tubing and was sure he got water in his ear again. He had not had any pain, just a sensation of his ear being plugged. He dove off the swim raft ..went down deep and came up with severe pain in his ear. I keep thinking the possiblility exists he ruptured his ear drum. He has had very little pain since then, but did temporarily loose his hearing for about 24 hours in that ear. Any thoughts on how to treat this? Any homeopathic remedies? He did rupture it once when he was a child. I recall lots of bloody discharge. He has not had any that this week at all. Any discharge is clear along with some typical ear wax looking stuff. Quote
Jean in Newcastle Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 It could be swimmer's ear - an external ear infection. You can get a homeopathic remedy by Similisan http://www.similasanusa.com/products-earache-relief.cfm Note- it says not to use it if you have a ruptured ear drum. Quote
Joker Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I ruptured my ear drum when I was younger and since then when I have problems there is a lot of pain until the discharge. The discharge is always clear to yellow in color and I have no pain after. The only way to stop the discharge for me was to go to the Dr. and start an antibiotic, sometimes even a repeat dose. Also, I have always had a problem since the initial injury to going down too deep in the water or flying in airplanes. If your son has any discharge he should see a doctor - mine never cleared up on their own. Quote
mommylawyer Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 My husband ruptured his about a month ago. His was precluded by a severe ear infection. Once it ruptured, he did have some discharge (I don't know if it was bloody). The pain subsided for a day or so, then came back worse than ever. He went to a clinic and was treated by a nurse practitioner - she gave him antibiotics and some very expensive ($70 for a tiny bottle) ear drops - the drops helped with the pain and were antibacterial. (I joked that each drop cost a dollar.) Another note about the drops, my husband didn't buy them at first, but waited four more days after he had started the antibiotic and wasn't getting better. The drops definitely helped. I believe she gave him a prescription painkiller, too. A month later, DH still hasn't quite regained 100% hearing in that ear, but he's not in pain and the hearing is slowly coming back. Quote
