freeindeed
Anyone used this? What are your thoughts on using it with a 9 year old who's never been taught any Latin? Too babyish? Should I just stick with my original plan of Prima Latina? Thanks!
BabyBre
My 6 and 8 year-olds really enjoy it. Dd8 is very musical, always singing and dancing, so she especially benefits from the songs. We're moving very slowly and are going to continue to use it through this year. No one complains about it here. It is extremely gentle, however, so if you wanted a more serious or rigorous approach to Latin, rather than a gentle introduction, maybe go with PL. freeindeed
Thanks for the reply. My dd loves music, so she might enjoy this. Hmmm...it just occured to me that I could show her both of the programs and let her decide. Also, Lord willing, we'll have our baby girl home from China at that point (planning to start Latin after Christmas.) A gentle approach may be just what we need. AudreyTN
Congrats on the baby! :) I would like to do that one day....:tongue_smilie: You could always do both programs. SSL is a wonderful, gentle, fun approach. The focus is really being an Intro to Latin and teaches a lot of vocabulary. Prima Latina (from what I understand) is based on grammar. Two different approaches, she'd get a lot out of both. Last year, we did Song School Latin and Latin's Not So Tough 1. Once or twice a week we did Minimus, but stopped when I got pregnant so we're going to start it up again after the baby is born.
kckamy
I used Song School Latin with my daughter when she was 8.5 and we loved it. It was a fun, easy way to learn 100+ words in Latin and with the new addition to your family this might be what you need. Since my daughter was a little older, we completed the program in about 4 months. This program can be done with younger children but I don't think it will be too babyish for your 9 year old. I am very glad we started out with SS before beginning Latin For Children. SS Latin helped us learn the sounds that letters make in Latin. Having this knowledge will really help when you start a full Latin curriculum. Amy
AudreyTN
I forgot to mention that I still sing the Latin Vowel song to myself sometimes. :D
freeindeed
I showed dd both programs, and she wants Prima Latina. Shoot...I was hoping for the monkey!
abbeyej
Ouch. I think *both* of those programs would be pretty babyish for a 9yo! But *definitely* Song School. It wouldn't hurt for her to learn the songs, if she can tolerate nursery-rhyme level music (it's not *bad*, it's just that some children are more willing to listen to and enjoy music like that than others), but I just can't imagine doing Song School with a child much over 6 or 7 (unless maybe they were under the impression that they were just "listening in" on a younger child's lessons). A 9yo could do Prima Latina, but I would expect it to take 1 semester at most. It's *five*words* a week, and some incredibly basic grammar ideas like "this is a noun". It's a lovely program for a very young child, but I would expect most 9yos to be bored out of their heads taking it at the pace at which it's written. I would plan to do it quickly and move on.
