HappyGrace
I know there is no Intensive Practice for Standard Edition. Will they be coming out with this? And in the meantime, I forgot if the IP for U.S. Edition can be used with Standard Ed? And I'm SURE it would be too much to ask for, but do the Standard Ed. HIGs schedule in the IP from the U.S. Edition? If not, will it be obvious where to plug in the IP? I'm pretty sure I read this all somewhere before, but I can't find it! KarenNC
The IP workbook is not correlated to the standards edition except to the extent that the topics overlap. Here's the scope and sequence of the two side by side (note that there isn't yet info on the level 6 of SE, but that is supposed to be out this summer) http://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2008.pdf.'>http://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2008.pdf.'>http://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2008.pdf.'>http://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2008.pdf. I very much doubt that the standards HIGs mention the IP at all. You would have to go topic by topic matching them up. If you go to http://www.singaporemath.com and look at the particular level of IP you want, you can take a look at the table of contents. Between that and the scope and sequence, you could probably figure out which portions go with which between the two (though the SE will have a few sections that the IP won't address at all because those topics aren't covered in the US edition---see scope and sequence). As some of the topics have been moved up or down a level, you may need more than one level of the IP to cover everything in the level of SE at which your child is working, depending on level. The IP also only does exercises on the whole unit, it isn't broken down lesson by lesson to go along with the textbook. I believe there are plans to eventually have an IP to go along with the standards, but that is not scheduled for publication, as far as I know. They are working to get all the SE levels and HIGs to go along with those levels out (4A HIG is due out in late summer). All that said, it can be done if you want, but the IP is not required in order to use the program. I know some folks who have particularly math-oriented kids use the IP in place of the workbook, and some others use it for supplementation, but we did not. My daughter is not particularly math-oriented (her strengths lie in language arts) and we found the IP too intensive for us, so we stuck with the workbook, pulling in extra worksheets or material on any topic that was particularly troublesome. Hope that helps!
Dana
We're using IP (US) with the Standards Edition (Level 2 this year). The HiG doesn't mention IP anywhere. It has been very easy to see where to use IP though. Chapter titles are the same as the text although not all topics from the text are covered with the IP, so I'd be sure to use the Workbook as well. nmoira
According to Jenny (author of the HIG's, etc,) on the Singapore Math boards, "You can certainly use the US ones. Particularly at 1A and 1B level, since there is not much difference between the editions at that level."
HappyGrace
This is great-Karen, your detailed response was so helpful! And I appreciate the other additional responses for clarification. I am SO excited about Singapore! I think the IPs will be a great way to cement/expand the topics after the workbook.
tedearly
Howdy- DD has finished 2nd grade both years using IP. If the problems were too difficult, I would work through them with her. Or sometimes I would use the problems at the end of the year as a review test of sorts. It wasn't difficult to find good use for them. I think DD watching me reason the problems out are valuable part of her learning.
cylau
I have asked the same exact question on the Singapore Math Forum. If you go to the forum --> Math (Pre-Purchase Questions) --> look for date 6/7/09. Jenny said it's OK to use IP US ed with SE text, but there will be topics in SE text that won't be in IP US ed. HappyGrace
Thanks, I will look for it at the Singapore forum; in fact, that may have been where I saw it before!
