Cricket
I put three used books in my cart from the same seller. Now when I checkout, I'm being charged $3.99 for each book even though they could probably all be shipped for that same price. What am I missing? I'm searching the help files but haven't found anything. Has anyone been able to combine shipping on used books?
Ohdanigirl
That's one of the problems with Amazon. Try half.com.
hsmom3tn
The $3.99 fee is charged by amazon, not the seller. The sellers can't change the shipping charges. It's a flat $3.99 for standard and $6.99 for expedited. Amazon takes a big chunk of the sale price (a $1 selling/listing fee and a flat $1.35 commission plus 15%), so the seller relies on any extra money from the shipping to help with packaging materials and to add to their profit. On the other hand, if you buy a book that weighs more than 4 pounds, it is going to cost more than $3.99 to ship it, and the seller just has to pay the extra. I have a friend who has been selling on amazon for over a year now and when she first started, she would give a refund for the shipping overage when someone purchased more than one book. Someone from Amazon wrote to her and asked her to stop doing that. Edited July 11, 2009 by hsmom3tn

We've frequently bought from abebooks.com and I think that many of the sellers there will give a combined rate for shipping.
