shiloh
We'll be in NC in mid August. We'll be in the Duke/Durham area for a few days and then we have a few days for travel. I have a hotel room for one night in Kitty Hawk (suggestions for that area?) But I'd love to see Biltmore or what ever else is great and/or charming or special in NC. Or what not to miss. We're driving and it's me, my husband, and two daughters ages 6 and 9 I'd love to hear your suggesions. Thanks. We enjoyed the Wright's Brothers Museum for a little homeschool during the summer :) When we go and it rains, we go to the aquarium in Manteo...very fun! eema
We just visited Kitty Hawk last month and loved it! The Wright Brothers Memorial was fun, there was a paper-airplane-making class going on that my kids (2 and 6) enjoyed. Also, there is an outdoor play that is performed all summer long in Manteo, which is not far away, called The Lost Colony. It was wonderful, and the kids both loved it - dd is still talking about Queen Elizabeth and even the 2yo wants to know when we can go back to the play. Out of everything we did there, this was their favorite! Here's the web site for the play: http://www.thelostcolony.org/

There was a child at our viewing that had obviously missed her nap that afternoon and really should have had it. It was worsened by the fact that neither parent took her out when she got mouthy. We did really enjoy the play even with the 3 yo behind us.

Jan in SC
If you end up heading toward Asheville/Brevard, the Pisgah National forest has some great attractions. The Pisgah Inn is a very cool, top of the mountain place to stay. It has a wonderful restaurant, as well. Looking glass falls, the fish hatchery, sliding rock, and various tubing spots are fun and very inexpensive or free! ($1 per person?) We just returned from this area and had a wonderful vacation. The Biltmore house is beautiful, but my 3 boys wouldn't have had the patience. There is a small village filled with shops and restaurants that is fun to walk. Have fun! Oak Knoll Mom
The Biltmore house is beautiful, but my 3 boys wouldn't have had the patience. There is a small village filled with shops and restaurants that is fun to walk. My three boys love it. We have season passes and go over there to walk around the gardens, hike/bike along the river, and hang out at River Bend Farm. They do like the house, though! My advice would be to go after 2:00 p.m. and tour the house (and maybe the greenhouse), then go back the next day (for free!) to tour everything else. From www.Biltmore.com Arrive after 2:00 p.m. and visit the next day for free! Simply enter the gate after 2:00 p.m. and your admission ticket will be valid for the next day as well.Feel free to ask any other questions about our lovely area! :-) Edited July 9, 2009 by Oak Knoll Mom clarity
JESSICAinMD
I loved the Biltimore. The gardens are really lovely. We also went to Chimney Rock, breathtaking views from the top and at the waterfall. (good for active children.) http://www.chimneyrockpark.com/ They have homeschool activities in the fall. I don't think they have anything planned for the summer though. shiloh
I should have added my husband loves GOOD FOOD (I appreciate it myself) so I'd be grateful for restaurant suggestions, as well. Thanks for the responses. Edited July 9, 2009 by shiloh editing is a way of life

Laurie4b
Durham--Museum of Life and Science is very nice. There is a butterfly environment you walk through, outside animals including black bears and red wolves, inside animals include various snakes, owls, alligators. There are different things from our space program, lots of rocks and minerals, etc. There is also a nice playground area. There's also a lake/boardwalk on the way to the outdoor animals. Durham has a vibrant black history. There are several places around town that you may want to visit. Durham Bulls Games are fun in the summer. The Planetarium in Chapel Hill is awesome. There is also a nice art museum that is part of UNC. Very close to both is the university arboretum. There is also a botanical garden in Chapel Hill. There are many nice hiking trails around the Eno River. What kind of food does your husband like? There are so many good restaurants that it would help to narrow them down. shiloh
:auto: Quick follow up: We ate at Spanky's in Chapel Hill. Pretty good. My husband ate a pulled pork sandwich on a roasted bun with cole slaw. Mmm...too many calories for me, though. Plus two interesting beers. I had a tomato and mozerella salad w/ vinaigrette. Delish. We also ate at the Washington Duke in Durham. We had a shrimp, corn and bacon chowder. I had a petite filet from the children's menu and he had a shrimp, sausage and tomato saute over asiago grits. Super yummy. The house red was very good. We golfed there too. What a lovely course. Then there was Adrianna's on Manteo's waterfront (Outer Banks). Perfect. We had a mushroom and crab chowder and we split a fabulous entree but I can't remember what it was because I'm a functioning amnesiac. You North Carolinians are extremely lucky with such a cool, beautiful state. I'm surprised you don't brag more.

And did you know that Virginia Dare's birthday was just a few days ago? (She was the first English child born in the New World, in the "Lost Colony.") When Mr. Ellie and I went, we bought rain ponchos just in case, and yes, we ended up wearing them. :-) We also took the behind-the-scenes tour beforehand. That was *very* interesting. Ellie
There are four lighthouses on the OBX: Currituck Beach, which is north of Kitty Hawk in Corolla (my grandfather was born there); Bodie Island (pronounced "body"); Hatteras; and Ocracoke (where my g-grandfather was the last keeper). You can visit all four in a day. Ocracoke is the furthest south and requires a ferry trip across to Ocracoke Island. You can get a passport from the United States Lighthouse Society, and have it stamped at each lighthouse (they ask for a small donation). Very kewl. You can see all four in a day.
