wonderfilled
I'm looking for something for my two ds's (6 and 8) to build fluency and also help with decoding multi-syllable words. Has anyone used either of these and did you like them? Does anybody have any other suggestions? I was considering higher levels of ETC or MCP workbooks but I wasn't sure that would help. What have you used or does fluency come through reading? That's what my sister tells me when I mention my worries that my children won't become really good readers but I think it's because she has a 8yo girl that's a natural reader. Is the Victory Drill Book broken up into syllables? Was it a problem for your dc to read words that weren't broken up into syllables after using Webster's Speller? Thanks a lot. momofabcd
I've used both. I'd personally pick Webster's over Victory Drill Book. Webster's has so many more multi-syllable words than Victory Drill Book making it more complete, imo. But I think it also depends on your goals. Webster's will be better for learning how to read multi-syllable words. Victory Drill Book is good speed practice to build fluency. I also think it's inefficient to use readers/books to build fluency. Readers/books should be used for comprehension. My ds has had no problem reading the words split apart in Webster's. I use a dry erase board and write the words split apart, then after he reads them through, I rewrite them as a whole. He does quite well with it. I used VDB with my dd when she was 7. I found that I had to split the multi syllable words apart when she first read them. Hope this helps. wonderfilled
Thanks for the reply. My goal is more to build competence in reading multi-syllable words so it sounds like Webster's is the better choice. They both read rather fluently at their own levels. I've actually already printed off part of Webster's so I think I'll start with that and see how I like it.

ElizabethB
With my remedial students and my daughter, I've found that fluency comes with repeated decoding and spelling practice, not repeated reading. I have a new step by step to Blend Phonics that builds up to Webster's Speller if you're having trouble figuring it out, it also includes spelling and syllable division rules, it's on my how to tutor page. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/howtotutor.html I haven't seen victory drill book, although Don Potter has, some of the schools in Texas use it. He's on vacation now (actually, so am I, but I'm stopping by for a bit!), but I can ask him how it compares when he gets back.
