Johanna
will that save you *the seller*from seller fees....??? what are these new fees anyways....and could this new "personal" tab option be the way out of them???
leaird
Yes, you can choose the personal tab in order to bypass the new fees that Paypal has begun to charge. I have been selling my used curriculum lately and have told buyers to add the new charge to the payment if they would like to use Paypal. One of my buyers contacted Paypal and was told that it was acceptable to send the payment through the Personal tab in order to avoid the fees. If Paypal representatives are advising people to do that, I don't see any ethical reason not to do it.
LMA
Be careful. Regardless if a Paypal rep told you to use Personal, the user agreement states this: 4.2 Receiving Payments for Commercial Transactions and Personal Transactions. a. Fees depend on whether you are making a commercial transaction or a personal transaction. A commercial transaction involves buying and selling goods or services, and payments received when you send a “request money†using PayPal. A personal transaction involves sending money to and receiving money from friends and family without making a purchase. b. If you are selling goods or services, you may not ask the buyer to send you a personal payment for the purchase. If you do so, PayPal may remove your ability to accept personal payments. Rhonda in TX
I've been accepting credit card payments for years, so I pay fees either way. I think it may also affect your ability to get your money back in the case of problems. If it's not for "goods", there's nothing to refund money for. Rhonda in TX
Employees can be unethical (or lacking in knowledge) in their advice.
jplain
One of my buyers contacted Paypal and was told that it was acceptable to send the payment through the Personal tab in order to avoid the fees. Did the PayPal rep tell the buyer that she forfeits all buyer protection when using the Personal tab?
Johanna
all good points. Thanks!
Dobela
I haven't tried to get out of the fees. To me it is very dishonest to say the money I am receiving is personal when I am actually selling something. So far the new fees are about 10% of the total so I have been adding about that much to my selling prices, and letting buyers know. I did discover last week that you get a small postage discount if you use the paypal shipping labels and pay for shipping thru them. IT was definately less than the price I quoted using the usps website.
pixeldog
I do the same with regard to adding fees to my prices. I'm happy to pay for the services that PayPal offers me. It's convenient, safe and fast!
