lionfamily1999
Milton wrote, 'Paradise Lost' They're all authors, I believe, but I'm pretty darn tired today. Go to Amazon and put their names in the search bar there.
Catherine
I'm interested in whether anyone here is aware of age-appropriate retellings, or good author biographies, or shorter, less well-known works by these authors and poets that would be appropriate for a third grade boy. TWTM often names an example, but for the 1600-1850 period, for these authors, no specifics are given.
Chris in VA
Y'know, for 3rd grade, I wouldn't read anything by these authors, except maybe Last of the Mohicans in the Great Illustrated Classics edition (which would give the plot, but nothing of the rich language). Some things can wait.
lionfamily1999
:iagree: Sorry, like I said I'm bushed :) I would check Dalmation Press (Walmart) for children's versions.
mcconnellboys
For third grade, you might read a poem or two by Tennyson or Browning; read encyclopedia entries about these authors; and/or perhaps read an illustrated classic re-telling of one of Cooper's works. Some folks don't like these, but I see nothing wrong with them as an intro to very long works. There was also a set of made for TV movies about the Leatherstocking saga that was made in the late '80's or early '90's, I think. My boys have always loved these. Comus, adapted by Margaret Hodges from A Mask at Ludlow Castle, by John Milton. My 3rd grade boy liked it - it's a nice picture book with a good story. Then there is The Last of the Mohicans (Cooper) adapted by Les Martin - that was good, too. And have a look at my library website, children's section, for Tennyson possibilities: http://catalogue.halifaxpubliclibraries.ca/ipac20/ipac.jsp?npp=10&ipp=20&spp=20&profile=hpl&aspect=subtab431&term=tennyson&index=.AW&uindex=&oper=&ri=1&session=1T467HH719171.47802&menu=search&aspect=subtab431&npp=10&ipp=20&spp=20&profile=hpl&ri=1&source=~!horizon&sort=&go_sort_limit.x=8&go_sort_limit.y=8&limit=CO01+%3D+co_J For bios this might be useful (I haven't seen it, but it's in the children's section) http://catalogue.halifaxpubliclibraries.ca/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=1T467HH719171.47802&profile=hpl&source=~!horizon&view=subscriptionsummary&uri=full=3100039~!129541~!0&ri=5&aspect=subtab431&menu=search&ipp=20&spp=20&staffonly=&term=tennyson&index=.TW&uindex=&aspect=subtab431&menu=search&ri=
