Hi everyone,

I'm needing to find a 'gentle' approach to grammar for my third grader. I'm not interested in anything as comprehensive as Shurley English until next year. Any ideas? This is for a very bright boy. :) I just want a good introduction for this year.

Thanks so much,

Bethany

You may consider looking at Emma Serl's or Hillside Education's Primary or Intermediate Language Lessons. You can pick depending on where your ds us with Grammar.

You can also get ILL as a workbook broken up into three different levels from www.livingbookscurriculum.com

I personally love Queen's Lanugage Lessons and you can easily go up a level or two if you want it more challenging.

One of my ds, also a bright boy who is very verbal, enjoyed English for the Thoughtful Child 2 in 3rd grade. It was gentle grammar and writing. We followed it with ILL for 4th and 5th and will finish ILL in 6th this year. PLL is also lovely for a gentle grammar approach, though it includes less teaching on the names of the parts of speech, etc. I believe the teacher's manual would remedy that.

I'd go with First Language Lessons. If he hasn't had any grammar you may want to start with the 1/2 level book. It's easy to skip redundant lessons or double up on easy ones. My dd that just finished third grade used 1/2 this past year. She wasn't reading well enough in first, and couldn't wrap her brain around it in second. Then she flew through it in third. At the speed she's moving through the level 3 book right now I expect her to finish FLL 4 by the end of fourth grade. (I'll put her in R&S 5 for fifth)

I'm still looking and trying to decide. I appreciate all the insight. Some of the programs that were recommended offer a bit more than I am wanting to cover at this point. He will be doing IEW and BJU reading. So, I'm not wanting to duplicate those areas in this particular subject. I'm just wanting something very simple that will give him a good intro. to grammar.

I think i might be leaning toward growing with grammar.

Any other ideas/thoughts?

Thanks again!

We have been using Easy Grammar since 3rd grade. I have been pleased with this program. It is a complete grammar program without the student or teacher feeling overwhelmed. We also use Daily Grams but this is optional, especially if your son is just getting started with grammar.
