Christy B Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 My current 9th grade line-up: (1) Geometry or Algebra II (waiting for input from Professor Schmidt before I make a final decision) (1) Biology (DIVE CD with weekly lab group) (1) English I (Grammar, Literary Lessons from LOTR, composition across the curriculum) (1) World History I (part one of BJU's World History, with Church History from Omnibus II) (1/2) Band (1/2) World Geography I (?) P.E. -- swimming and hiking; surely worth of 1/4 credit but possibly not worthy of 1/2 My first thought was to go ahead and start Spanish; however, the way our schedule is falling out with band and the extra lab class, I don't see any way dd could devote an hour *each day* to language, which I imagine is the key to success. We do have a large block of time on Thursday and Friday afternoons that we could devote to an elective. If it makes a difference if your suggestions, dd currently plans to pursue nursing or something in an applied science (forestry, nutrition, etc) but I want to keep as many options open as possible. Here are some I have considered: Home Ec (I have the Alpha Omega Home Ec set already, not sure if we'll use it as a full year course, or just fit it in here and there and award a credit when it's finished -- but we could easily do this two afternoons a week this year and complete the entire program) Total Health (I already have this on hand as well) Computer Science (I would need suggestions as to what to use) One other thing -- I have the Memoria Press teacher's guide to Classical Studies (covers the Bible, D'Aularies Greek Mythology, and Famous Men of Rome) and I absolutely positively am going to find some way to incorporate this into our studies. I was thinking of doing it over three or four years and not really "counting" it as anything (it could just be part of whatever Bible/History/Literature courses we're working on). I have wondered, though, if we completed the course in one year if it would be worthy as a 1 credit elective (provided that the 9th grader completed ALL of the work, including the honors work, and wrote at least one paper per quarter). K-FL Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Either of your 2 "thoughts" would work nicely. For the Classical class, if you did it in 1yr or even 1/2 over the yr I'd certainly count it as an elective. Just keep track of your hours & any "proof" of the class (tests, papers, pictures of projects, etc) the same as you will with PE. The only other thought is for some type of Fine Arts. Quote
Myra Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Also...if you do the classical study route...check out the National Mythology Exam....it's pretty easy & straight-forward....plus a nice way to show "proof" of learning! Myra Quote
Heather in VA Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I know you said you don't think you have time for it but I'd start a language. That's a must have credit for graduation and would be a much better investment of your time than an elective. Heather Quote
HeatherInWI Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 How about an art class? Or a business/entrepreneurship one? Quote
