Current affairs and small kids.

Recommended Posts

My aunt was telling me that "Behind the News" might well be useful for homeschooling purposes. Obviously I intended to look into that sort of thing when my kids were approaching logic stage, but she tells me the program has been overhauled and her 3 1/2 year old will half watch it, occasionally looking up to ask questions.

Don't really have a question, I guess. More curious about any general musings for current affairs and grammar stage kids.

Cheers,

Rosie

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I get ALL of my news right here on this board. Honestly, I don't watch tv, read the newspaper, or check out the news on the internet. If it were not for this board, I would have never heard of Jon & Kate (pardon my Jack here, but I wouldn't know them if I was p*ssing on them), Mark Sanford, the lady with octuplets, the Duggars, or any of the celebrity deaths. You people are better than the AP. By the time, someone in real life tells me something, I have already heard about it right here. And unfortunately, it seems lately that I have been getting more bad news than ever. It really makes me wonder what the heck is going on out there in the real world. :001_huh:

I remember watching BTN as we called it in about year 5. We had to take notes and then do a report on one of the topics after.

My kiddos have watched it accidentally once. They were watching ABC kids before hand and didn't switch off and i was busy doing something else. I am not sure what age it is aimed at now, but i know DD1 got something out of it. Can't remember what it was about now, but she was full of info right after. I am not sure that i would want her watching it all the time, right now at her age because i remember some of the topics being not so age appropriate for littles. However i don't see anything wrong with it once they are 7 or 8 provided they are not sensitive kids ofcourse.

The real news however is a whole nother topic.

Looking at their website, they are aimed at logic stage kids, but I'm finding it interesting that smaller kids get something out of it. I remember watching at school too, but there's nothing like the threat of a report to kill any interest! From their site, it seems a bit tabloid-ish, but some of the segments look good. I guess it's something that won't do grammar stage kids any harm, but isn't really worth focusing on?
