How to know if ACT score is good enough

Recommended Posts

My dd just took the ACT at the end of her junior year. This was her first time taking it. She got a 25 which I believe is a little above average. She did great on the reading (31) and english (27) but not so well on the science and math (21). I think her main problem in those areas as that she understands the math but doesn't do well when she is rushed.

She has a 4.1 gpa on a 4 point scale (she has had a few honors classes that she got A's in and those count for more).

She knows that she wants to be an elementary ed teacher. So far the only two colleges she has looked into don't require a very high score. One is a small private school and the other is a state college. Non of the colleges she is considering are selective.

My dh thinks that the 25 is good enough and that she doesn't need to take the ACT test again. I'm on the fence. I'm wondering if she should take the ACT again next fall to see if she could raise her math and science score. She HATES taking these tests and gets very stressed out so I'm wondering whether or not to push her to take it and just let her keep her 25 score.

Since this is the case, I wouldn't push her to take it again. If she up and decided that she wasn't pleased with her score and could do better, then I would let her try again. But, if she's way past the requirements of her prospective colleges and doesn't care to try again, I wouldn't ask her to.

A 25 is certainly enough to get her into most any college. However, if she is looking for a scholarship, she may need a higher score. I would check with the schools she is most interested in and find out what scores are required for scholarships. The admissions office will have that information.

Are Your Students Ready for College?

ACT has established the following as

college readiness benchmark scores for

designated college courses:

* English Composition: 18 on ACT English Test

* Algebra: 22 on ACT Math Test

* Social Science: 21 on ACT Reading Test

* Biology: 24 on ACT Science Test

Some colleges have "automatic" scholarships if you have a certain GPA and ACT score. If that's the case with a 26, 27, etc.... it could easily be worth the time/registration fees to take it again.

FYI--I think the math is the easiest to raise. It's hard to suddenly be a better reader in a year(although you can learn test strategies), but it's easy to work on math areas where you need help.

ER's college automatically awards scholarships for ACT scores of 24 & above. Another college he was considering automatically awarded scholarships for ACT scores of 31 & above. It all depends on how selective the school is. The OP mentioned that the schools her dd is considering aren't very selective, so a 25 is likely a good enough score.

Call the admissions offices at the schools she wants to attend, and ask if they have a "Freshmen Profile" from the previous year. It will likely tell you the average range of scores for students seeking admission, and the average range for those who were admitted (and possibly the range of those who actually chose to attend). If they give academic scholarships, they may also be able to give you those numbers for scholarship offers.

What a school *requires* as a minimum, and what they actually *admit* may be quite different. Although if these schools are not competitive, the numbers are likely closer than they would be with more competitive schools. Still, knowing that information would be much more helpful to you than knowing simply the minimum required.

Many schools recommend taking the ACT/SAT twice because they do see a rise in scores from the Junior to the Senior years. My son's ACT score went up in some areas and down in others, but overall the score went up. It's worth a try if you are wanting your daughter to earn scholarships.

My dd just got back her results and I want her to re-take it in a year. She's 16 and is going to start college courses this year. She had a 27 overall. Math-27, science-21, reading-32 and english-29.

I think she can bring it up before she transfers to a bigger college from our little juco nearby.
