timmys mom
Someone gave me an old Hooked on Phonics set from 1998, and it has 5 different levels (each in their own box) And a parents guide box. But I don't see anything on it about ages or grades. I'm homeschooling Kindergarten, but I wondered if I could use this for 1st grade phonics too, maybe even 2nd grade? I figured someone on here has had to have used an old one like this at some point. TIA
Pata
I believe that the first level is now the Kindergarden level, the next two are now first grade level and the last two are now the second grade level. We used the HOP to learn to read, but it only lasted a year and a half here. I would just got at thier pace and see how long it lasts. Hope that helps! timmys mom
Thanks that does give me some idea. I was also just planning to go at his pace.. I just wanted to get some idea of how much should be covered in K to make sure he wasn't going to fall behind or anything. (As I doubted I could get through all 5 boxes in one year lol)
kckamy
I used this for all three of my children starting in Pre-K. I agree with an earlier post that this old set is recommended for grades K-2. I totally loved this program. All three of my children learned to read at a young age using this program. They all have pleasant memories of working through this program with me. I did not use the cassette tapes at all. My children are now 16, 14, and 9 and they all love to read. I feel that the way the program is designed (very phonics based) also helped my children to become very good spellers. I highly recommend this program. I am saving my set for grandchildren! ElizabethB
The old HOP has even more sight words than the new one. If you use it, I would teach the sight words phonetically instead. I can not link right now, but if you click on my web site, then select "On Reading" and the top and then go to the sight word page, you will see why and how to teach all but 5 of the most commonly taught 220 sightwords with phonics instead. I have remediated a lot of students who had reading difficulties from too many sight words.
timmys mom
Thanks for the tip Elizabeth! :) We have just started, and the only part he's had difficulty with so far are the 5 "sight" words he's suppose to memorize. He works so much better with sounding things out, so that will help a lot.

Here's the link: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/sightwords.html It is really much easier to teach them phonetically, it's crazy the way the sight words keep on going.
