TheCoffeeChick
Okay, so I thought I had our history planned out for next year ... but now have changed my mind. :tongue_smilie: I was going to do Beautiful Feet American History, but I don't think it will fit for what I am looking for. In keeping with the 4 year history cycle, I am leaning toward SOTW 2 for next year. (We did TOG 1 last year.) I also want to include a small study on US History, because I don't want to wait so long before introducing the kids to it. I was thinking of doing a US President study, doing 1-2 presidents a week for the year or a year long study of the states, doing 1-2 per week. I am not leaning toward one or the other right now, but I am having a hard time finding any curriculum that looks like this. So, Here is the Big Question: Does anyone know of a curriculum out there for our study of the Presidents or the States? OR am I going to have to make one up? ;)
hmschooling
Our library has a book on each state available with facts and pictures. It's a series, but I don't remember the name of it. I bet if you search your library and use state names as the title or subject search, you could find it. YOu might consider Little Man in the Map as a supplement. mcconnellboys
McGraw Hill's Complete Book of Presidents and States will give you a base of worksheets, then you can use a good US Atlas and bios from your library to read more about anyone you have particular interest in (or just read about them from a good encyclopedia or even a good dictionary). Lovedtodeath
Hewitt Homeschooling has American History readers that I plan to use. (It isn't presidents, but just in case you want to give them a look.) American Tales Reader Across America Reader
TheCoffeeChick
Thank you for the suggestions :) I am really more looking for a curriculum, designed for a 36 week study of the presidents or states. I saw some notebooking pages I'll pick up to go with whatever we decide on, but I'd really like something that is laid out week by week. Anybody?? Tanya in KS
Simply Stated & Simply Presidential Together. I loved it. We used our encyclopedias the most for our information. I just wanted the children to learn the pres and a little about them & the times that they were going through and also all the states and capitals. It is a VERY easy program to use with all the research done for you! I HIGHLY recommend it. I also have several of the resources if you are interested in purchasing it!:) Just PM me and I could let you know what I have available
HollyDay
I have an idea. Have you looked at All American History vol1 (Leif Ericson to 1840)? Timberdoodle carries it. The dates wont line up completely with SOTW vol 2, but you could add in early American.
dsacco
My kids enjoyed this for the state studies http://www.knowledgequestmaps.com/prod5.htm We used it in conjunction with state notebooking pages and they made some nice books for each kid over the summer. Kate in Arabia
For presidents, I bought this series this year: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=getting+to+know+presidents For 36 weeks, you could do a president a week and just double up a few weeks where there was a less "meaty" presidency. I also have this, which is more "workbooky", but has a lot of activities that are well organized: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-U-S-History/dp/1561896799/ref=pd_sim_b_10
elfgivas
we use the mike venezia books, that kate in arabia linked dto, and our dc love them. they voluntarily pick them up just to read them. and they remember what they read! we are using the little house on the prairie books as read alouds right now (we're just finishing the caroline years) and so we read about the presidents who are in office at the time of what we are reading about. we do that with other times as they come up, too. hth, ann
TheCoffeeChick
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!! I knew the hive wouldn't let me down ;) Everyone's suggestions are great ... now to decide which is "The One". Ds told me last night that he wants to do presidents instead of states, so well do states in 2nd grade. I really like the Kreative Simplicity, looks very easy. But I also like the look of the Mike Venezia books, maybe combine them. My library has all the Venezia books, so it wouldn't cost very much to incorporate them. Thanks ladies. Julie in MN
We do states & pres-es with MFW but before that, when we would travel somewhere, I sometimes had them study up using About.Com and EnchantedLearning.com http://homeschooling.about.com/cs/unitssubjgeog/a/susindex.htm http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/ Easy Fun School also has things: http://www.easyfunschool.com/page1057.html
