Once
I am looking for suggestions about books about Canada. We are Canadians living in the US and I need some help with ideas. I have looked breifly at the Marshall's books but I remember hearing that there are a few not so appropriate words or chapters in them and that you would have to be careful. (Dd takes books and reads them so they need to be safe.) Kids are 9 and 6. Any ideas out there? Thanks !
Audrey
Donalda Dickie's My First History of Canada is pretty good for a spine of Canadian history for your dc's ages. It tells Cdn. history in a story-like format. Other great books for that age are the series of books by Kids Can Press (see link for the many titles. There are at least 4 pages of titles listed, so make sure to click through them). If you want a curriculum approach, the books by Donna Ward are very good. Canada, My Country would suit your 6yo well, but might be a little youngish for the 9yo. Courage & Conquest would suit the 9yo better and you could adapt it for your younger child. She also has one for geography called Province to Province, plus one on First Nations and a few others. Another excellent title which could be used as a spine is The Story of Canada by Janet Lunn. It is another story-like telling of history, but broken into small chapters and very beautifully illustrated throughout. You could also try The Canadian Children's Treasury also by Janet Lunn. It is fiction, but contains great classics of Cdn children's lit, including many of the famous history poems (Creation of Sam McGee, In Flander's Field, etc.)

I have no personal experience with the other books Audrey mentioned, but I have seen these and really like them. Dickie's book is perfect for the ages you mentioned - sort of like Story of the World, but just about Canada. The book by Lunn is really good, as well. It is similar to the Kingfisher history book recommended for logic stage. I like both and will use them with my daughter when she is older. Alana in Canada
I have been messing about with an older edition of Dickie's Book as well as C&C. I've been doing my best to correlate the two sources (and others) with geography at this site. Take a good look at the side bar. I've been collecting links to maps for a few months now and I have some hand drawn in the "files host" Unfortunately, I am sadly lacking good books, so I'd be thrilled to see if anyone has any posted. There used to be a list posted, but it is inactive now and "lost." Still, I can dig around in my files and see what I can find. However, there is also the "Our Canadian Girls" series of Historical fiction AND the "Dear Canada" seies. I prefer the latter, but only because I have a boy who wouldn't like to read a book with "girl" in the title! Marshall's book is very negative towards Native People. She really couldn't get over being a Victorian "lady", unfortunately. Well, that was my impression, anyway.
Alana in Canada
Oh, first, I forgot to mention the Librivox recording of "North American Indian Folktales" by W.T. Larned. It is absolutely wonderful. Ok, I found it. It is going to take several posts to get this up. It was first posted by someone names "nicola" and then re-posted by "jyl." I have no idea where I found it. Alana in Canada
Once--careful. I just went through the Early Explorer's list and found out that most of the titles in that category are oop. So, search your local library first--and I am sorry. But, as you can see, going through this list is SUCH a monumental task that I was saving it for "someday." Well, that day is here. For Early Explorers, I tracked down these: John Cabot & Son David by Goodnough Man From St. Malo by Robert D. Ferguson Gr. 5+ Runner of the Woods: The Story of Young Radisson, by Cicero Theodore Ritchie Gr. 5+ Captured By the Mohawks and other adventures of Radisson by Sterling North Gr. 4+ My library has these, so I know they are out there! Google books may be a good way to search for them.
Once
Alana this is way more than I had a few days age so "Thank-you" still applies. I am glad for your insight into the Marshall book. I had heard that somewhere else too. It is a huge list that seems to have several useable choices. The Kids Can Press link looked good. The Canadian Content link seemed to have some that I will not see down here. I have only one book called "That's Very Canadian" which my daughter has consumed several times. She know very little about home. I am embarassed to say may daughter thinks that "Oh Canada" is sung to her own made up tune. When I sung it to her she thought I was kidding!!!! Now to find a CD with "Oh Canada". As she exits quietly singing "......our home and native land"
Alana in Canada
Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I was a bit taken aback by its seeming lack of currency! I don't remember if you mentioned your daughter's age. There are some lovely colouring pages on Native People and early explorer's by Dover. As well, the Canadian War Museum has some interesting pages available on-line to print, as well. And take a look at the "curriculum" site I mentioned earlier. An Elelmentary History of Canada. I have links to lots of Canadian History sites on-line (and there are lots of them!) As it is in blog form, the first lessons are waaaaay down at the bottom! I'd love some feedback--it may just spur me on to finish the ruddy thing!
