BamaTanya
My dad had a dog with heartworms. Now we're thinking of switching houses. I have heard something about heartworms. Is it true? Are there any special precautions?
Orthodox6
Your dog takes monthly heartworm medication, already, I would guess. (That is what all the vets urge.) So there should be no problem, if the dog continues taking the medication, and sees the vet regularly.
cindyinTexas
come from a host. If your dog is bit by a infected mosquito and the mosquito transfers the microfilariae from an infected dog then your dog can develop heartworms. If you have it on heartworm monthly preventative you would not have to worry. Maybe you are thinking of some other kind of worm.

Pam Wilhelm
Heartworms need a mosquito......... Hookworms can stay in the soil........ from what I have always heard, anyway.
vettechmomof2
Intestinal parasites can stay in the ground and live to infect another critter. Heartworms are only transferrable by an infected mosquito, although 1 infected mosquito can infect many pets. THere are illnesses that can live in the ground for a bit to transfer to another animal but we need to know which one your dad's dog had. If it was only heartworm then it is not transferrable to your dog through each other, only mosquitos.
