Does anyone watch the new show " I didn't know I was pregnant?"

Recommended Posts

I was watching this last night and I can't imagine not knowing lol. This one lady had 3 kids and didn't know she was pregnant with the fourth. Now, I can almost see somehow not knowing with your first, but with your 4th? She goes to her job at a fast food restaurant, then goes into labor, and she didn't know she was in labor!?! There are 3 other woman, granted one was only 16, who go into the bathroom to help her. The 16 year old is on the phone with 9-11 when the mom has the baby into the toilet. They are all standing there in shock and the 9-11 operator has to tell them to remove the baby from the toilet. Wouldn't it be common sense if someone delivers a baby into a toilet to quickly grab it out?

I know everyone reacts different to shock and stuff, but I am wondering if these people were playing it up for reality TV?I don't think I will watch this again LOL.

I have seen that show before. Also, I have heard of it happening. But I have always thought, "How on EARTH could you not know you were pregnant?" For one thing, I always had lively babies who moved and rolled and rabbited around in there for hours. And the belly! How the heck do you figure that's just one too many ice cream sundaes? And the missing AF, of course.

Yeah. The show is not a repeater around here.

I could never understand it either, but my aunt had a friend who this happened to within the last two years. She was 40 something, had been trying to have children for years but had been told in her thirties that it was "impossible". Went on with her life as a teacher, etc., - started having really bad stomach problems, indigestion, etc. and found out about six weeks before the baby was born that she was about to have her first child. After the shock wore off, she and her husband were thrilled!

My cousin did not know she was pregnant until she was 7 months old. She went by her mother's to try on a dress that her mother made and her mother saw her shape in the dress and realized she was pregnant. She just assumed that she put on some weight from stress and that she didn't have a period from stress. (her marriage was stressed and they eventually divorced). She had a baby boy. Her boy is now 19.

I think a lot of times, the people who "didn't know" were in denial for some reason. Or they have some psychological issues going on. (Like a coworker of my SIL's, who denied being pregnant over and over, insisted she had been to the doctor and was not pregnant, even though everyone could see she was. She appeared to be shocked when she gave birth. She was getting some help for psychological problems after the birth.)

I am amazed at people who go all the way to labor without realizing they're pregnant, too. A pregnant belly doesn't feel the same as fat! Plus, it moves!:001_smile:

I am fairly confident that if I saw someone give birth in a toilet I would grab the baby out real quick like.....that is bizarre!

You know, I want to say that I would too, but I'm envisioning several women standing around in shock and horror, and I think the idea of grabbing a baby, barehanded, that was covered in a coworker's bodily fluids, meconium, vernix, etc...well, I might be rooted to the spot unintentionally!

There was never any mistaking either of my pregnancies, sheesh. And if I had a mysterious ailment that made me feel the way I did with my second pregnancy, you'd better believe I'd be at the hospital trying to figure out what it was and how to make it go away!

You make a good point LOL! It would be a *messy* job but in my vision I hear the baby crying kwim? Who knows what any of us would do - I pray we are never in that situation!

My 13 year old watched that show one day. I was not happy that she watched it, but it did lead to some interesting conversations...and decisions on her part! Since seeing that show (she saw the same one you did,) she has decided that IF she gets pregnant, she will not work in a FF restaurant, nor will she go camping...in fact, she may just check herself into a hospital as soon as a PG test shows positive

I think I would be given pause, that's for sure, and it's very possible someone would have to snap me out of it. If only, because it's so completely unexpected. I've noticed that things which are completely out of the ordinary tend to be difficult to understand at first. IOW, I would see a squirming red thing making a lot of noise, but it might take a moment for the idea of baby to pop into my head.

I agree with a pp that there MUST be a level of denial going on. I saw an episode where the lady had taken multiple tests, got negative results and assumed she had a tumor. Well, she didn't want a diagnosis, because then she would be sick (what you don't know won't hurt you, right?). She found out she was within two weeks of delivery and then they called her that night, said her test results came back and they needed to give her an emergency C-section. Can you imagine? Going home, omg I pregnant and then getting a call that you had to come back and give birth now?!?

I avoid that show, don't want the kids watching it, but sometimes I get drawn in......

I like this show...I think it started as a special or something and now it's a series. It's fascinating to me but the women all describe good reasons for not knowing. Some of them really did not get bellies at all (they show pictures). A lot of times the women were told they were infertile, so they just didn't think it was possible. And a lot of women are infertile because they do not ovulate very often at all, so missing periods doesn't cause them to think anything is different. For these women, they're not really in denial because they want a baby so badly!

I, for one, am an early tester if I suspect I could be pregnant and I can't imagine not knowing. But for normal, less obsessive women, I can see how this could happen.

My dd is adopted. Her birthmother claimed she didn't know she was pregnant until the preterm delivery. I find that hard to believe considering it was her 8th pregnancy. :001_huh: But then again, it had been 13 years since her last pregnancy. I have copies of the medical records where she denied she was pregnant (even claiming to be a homosexual woman who had not been with a man) until the results of the pregnancy test came back positive just minutes before she delivered our dd.

I think there are women who just don't know. My cousin became pregnant at 15 and didn't have any idea she was pregnant until a long way thru the pregnancy. She was young, had no idea what to look for, and didn't gain weight until about the 7th month.

I think it is weird that a woman wouldn't know! I saw a woman interviewed once who gave birth in the backseat of a car and swears she didn't know she was pregnant. She didn't gain weight, still wore normal clothes and claims she still had her monthly cycle while she was pregnant. She said the baby didn't move much either. So bizarre.

Right before I had my 2nd, my MIL calls to tell me that the girlfriend of my dh's cousin went into the ER with "appendicitis" and came out with a 5lb baby boy.

She had no idea. I was SUFFERING through the last few weeks of my pregnancy and decided it was NOT FAIR!:lol:

I had a friend who told me she didn't know she was pregnant until her 5th month. We had the kind of relationship where it was okay for me to say that it was difficult for me to imagine that. She said, paraphrasing here, "let me promise you when you hear about women not knowing they're pregnant until they're far along, it is DENIAL." She said there was a part of her that knew, but she couldn't face it and just kept hoping it wasn't true. (She was in a really bad situation at the time.)

There is no mistaking the sensation of a baby kicking in your womb. There is nothing else that the human body can do that feels like that! So I tend to agree with her that it is (usually if not always) major denial going on in those situations.

ETA: When she did have to face the fact that she was pregnant, my friend had the strength to get herself out of the horrible situation she was in, and she is now one fantastic mother.

One of my cousins was six months along when she found out.

How'd she not know? Well: (going by memory of what she told me - this was about 12 years ago)

a) this was her first (no previous pregnancy experience to recognize signs)

b) missing period - this wasn't really unusual for her, as her cycle had always been a bit wonky.

c) weight gain - she was already overweight and carried a lot of the extra weight in the abdominal area

d) swollen feet - see C. above, plus she was working in a fish plant, on her feet all day.

So yeah, it can happen. Haven't seen the show though.

When I was in college, I was working in the administration building at a student work job and a girl gave birth in the bathroom on the floor above us. She claimed to not have known she was pregnant, and it was a big story in the student paper. She was not a small girl, and she said she really hadn't gained more than five or ten pounds.

None of my pregnancies have been that uneventful that I could have even pretended not to know. I am thinking that if you are making TEA and missing monthlies, you should probably look into that.

I could imagine not knowing. When I first got pregnant, I was also in the beginnings of a serious anxiety disorder, and I was throwing up non-stop every day. (Gee, sound familiar?) Plus I had my cycle for almost all nine months. If I hadn't been actually checking monthly due to the meds I was on, I could easily have been four or five months along before even beginning to guess. And even then, the kicking felt an awful lot like the intestinal distress I was having.

I will say, nine months would be a lot harder to not realize ... but if you've already got a lot of stress going on, and a history of health issues, I can totally believe it happens to *some* people.

I had been told that I couldn't get pregnant, and I hadn't had a cycle for well over a year prior to conception. I had morning sickness from, literally, the third day after conception. I was sicker than a dog for several weeks before I went to the doctor. I remember telling her, "I think I am losing my mind. I swear I have morning sickness but I know I can't be pregnant." Sure enough, I was pregnant.

But before the doctor tested me, I seriously thought I was having major mental issues, like my mind was just playing tricks on me. Never once did I actually think I was pregnant!

Had I not had bad morning sickness, I don't know when I would have realized. But further into the pregnancy, DS was so active that I can't imagine not knowing!

I admit I can almost see a first time mom maybe not knowing. Sometimes these woman would spot throughout. That kind of thing. But a mom of 3 not knowing she was in labor? I mean it's not something you easily forget LOL.

I had to laugh too at each story the commentor would say something like" and with no pain medication XYZ delivered...blah blah". I am NOT saying it's wrong to have meds, but people DO have babies without them. Even on purpose :D It was so dramatic that they did it without LOL.

Anyways it was an interesting show.

Well...I didn't go 9 months without knowing but I did go almost 3. With my first 2 pregnancies, I knew within a couple weeks that I was pg. However, my 2nd ds started having alot of medical problems at 6 months. I was still bfing but it wasn't that successful. I didn't have a period, I was tired and nauseous, etc. I went to my gp when ds was about 8 mos old and he prescribed anti depressants for me. My baby was having multiple MRIs and dozens of tests with many specialists. My doc assumed it was stress. I was at work one morning. I was walking through a crowd and noticed that I was using my hand/arm to shield my stomach without realizing it. I only did that when I was preggers. A light went on for me. I bought a pg test on my way home from work. It was positive. I went to my OB and I was 11 weeks. Dd was born 15 months after her 2nd brother.

Um, I didn't know I was pg w/#1 until I was 6mo and only then because my sister made me test. I am super thin yet have always had a pooch and I figured I was just eating too much at the holiday times. I even went on a diet and did situps! The movement I chalked up to lots of gas. Had my sister not intervened I could see me being one who got to at least 8mo and not known because I was super small - never wore maternity clothes or had the usual "symptoms/signs". It was quite a shock when I found out, especially since it came just 2 weeks after a girl I worked w/found out she was 5mo pg and I declared how stupid she was, how could anyone be that far along and not know?!?! oops

I'd love to have another suprise pregnancy but alas, my morning (24/7 for 3mo) sickness wouldn't allow me to be surprised.

I've had 7 children and neither of those symptoms.:D

I didn't either. I'm VERY pale, and I did notice the blue veins across my chest and breasts notice become much more prominent, but it happened so gradually that I would never have registered it if I wasn't reading pregnancy books like crazy

I did not have any symptoms like that either.

With my daughter, I did miss my period but I was young and only took a taste due to a friend/coworker wanting to test and needing my emotional support(she was not married at the time). She tested negative, I did not:). I was 2 days late with my period but throughout the whole pregnancy never felt her move, saw her move or anything. I also did not gain any weight until my 8 months and had many clients argue with me that I was pregnant:confused:.

With my son: I felt off, smelled things much differently ( even noticed a different smell about myself which everyone else denied) but I started bleeding early and continued to bleed straight through the pregnancy then. He moved a lot, always had the hiccups and my stomach would just randomly move on its own at any given time, did I mention he moved a lot!

So, I could def. see someone young not noticing until late or not realizing certain symptoms but not as often as people are saying occur on this show.

We had a phone call about a year ago to say that dh niece, 20, had just had a baby girl. To say that everyone in the family was shocked, is a very big understatement.

I say that because, CJ (dh niece), is a lesbian. No one in the family has even seen her date a guy.

CJ always wears really big baggy clothes, so no one noticed if she did have a belly.

CJ said that she did not know she was pregnant. The first she knew about it was going to the ER with bad stomach cramps and 10 mins later holding her baby girl.

I personally think that she was in denial and somehow thought that it would go away if she didn't acknowledge it.

I find it odd that women can get to 9 months and claim they never knew they were pregnant.

I worked hard to get pregnant with my son, but the way my pregnancy progressed, it would have been very possible to never guess I was pregnant. I had bleeding issues on and off throughout the pregnancy, I only gained a few pounds, the early nausea and baby squiggling could have been easily explained away as stress-related as I was working on my doctorate and these feelings were not very different from early anxiety issues. On the outside, my body didn't change at all.

I actually had a friend who went to school with someone who literally went into labor and *did not* know what it was. She called the ambulance and someone suggested she was in labor a short while before she then gave birth. She had been on the pill throughout and never assumed a thing!!!!!!

Each of my pregnancies have been different. I occasionally do not have any symptoms except what I now realise would be a slightly enlarged bust and weird eating habits.

I'm avoiding the show like the plague. Its impossible not to know. Maybe early on of course but after at least 6 or 7 months there is no denying something is kicking you from the inside. Major, major denial is going on.

I had a friend in high school that had gotten pregnant. I knew she was right around 5 or 6 months yet she denied it the entire time. I even asked her and she told me no. She just didn't want to deal with it or let her mom know.

I know a few years ago in our area there was a story about a college girl who had a baby and killed it. Few days before she had a physical because she played sports and somehow hid it. After everything occured she claimed she didn't know she was pregnant and that the baby died at birth. Here to find out after they did investigating they found texts to certain people that yes, in fact , she knew she was.

After having four children myself it is possible in your early trimester not to know . I was 12 weeks along with my first third and fourth before I found out I was pregnant I was nine weeks with my second. I have thyroid issues so AF wasn't regular but darn it if your having a relationship with a person things should be checked out. Some of my girls were more active then others but they moved and kicked just the same. Its hard to believe that a baby would grow in a woman's belly for 9 months and not move. Sorry.

I have always found this to be totally bizarre. I remember some woman I saw on TV (not that show) who thought she had the flu, blah blah, because she was in labor! Surprise! I can understand a teenager, who might have an irregular cycle, but an adult woman -- especially someone who has had children before, I find it much harder to believe. A friend of mine was telling me about someone she knew who had her "period" all throughout her pregnancy. But I think maybe they just...don't pay attention or something. Scary. I know old ladies who only gained 10 lbs during pregnancies who still think that's normal and that anyone who gains more than that is letting herself go! Ha.

We had a friend of the family go to the hospital with a severe case of indigestion and come home with a baby. This was her 6th. She was a short, somewhat round woman. She hadn't gained more than a few pounds. She was at menopause and hadn't had a cycle in over a year, so there was no cycle to miss. She had had intestinal issues for much of her adult life, so movement felt like gas. She delivered a full term infant and shocked everyone, including herself and her hubby. Some of her older kids were not amused (at that age where parents having relations was totally 'Ick.')

I have never understood this either.

First, you have no period for 9 months.

You have something moving around in your belly.

You are gaining weight rather seriously.

Labor pains do not feel like indigestion or stomach cramps. Well, for me anyway, the pain was in my vaginal area.

I'm not trying to be mean, but if you are really large, could you just not feel it because of all of the fat?

I am sure that there are many cases where denial plays a large role. However, to say that every case is denial is an insult to the women who experienced a truly surprise pregnancy. My mom's friend was not in denial at 52 with her 6th child. She really didn't know. Her hubby really didn't know. Her doctor really didn't know (they didn't have instant pregnancy tests back then and, if you had insurance, it was major medical - no doctors visits covered nor tests. So they didn't run a test because she was supposedly menopausal.

Yes, it is unusual. Yes, it is hard to believe. That is why they made a show of it.

I guess I am basing it on what I experienced when pregnant. I can see at 52 being surprised, but there are just so many symptoms. I had colostrum leaking, my breasts were enlarged, the weight gain alone would have had me seeing a doctor. And, what in the world would all of that moving around be? I mean, I could see something moving across my stomach!

Did you watch the show? Most of the incidents they showed were women who did NOT have the normal symptoms. Not everyone goes nine months without a period. In my childbirth classes I taught, I has several students who had bleeding once a month, just like before the pregnancy. In the show, some of these women gained less than 10 lbs and never looked pregnant. There are lots of women with very irregular periods. I have a friend who only gets a period once or twice a year. She has had lots of infertility issues.

We have a friend who has brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta). She had been told she couldn't have children. She was at least five months along before they figured it out. She kept sending her husband to the store for stomach medicine, trying different ones. They were thrilled to have a child, and happy it didn't get the disease, which the baby had a 1 in 4 chance of inheriting.

The delivery didn't go smoothly. She had planned a C section ahead of time, as it was a necessity to keep her from breaking bones in delivery. She went into labor before the planned time arrived, and went to the hospital. It was on the weekend, her dotor wasn't on call, and they wouldn't perform the C section until someone could get into the locked doctor's office (in a skyscraper) and get her records out. She was not happy about the wait time. Why the doctor hadn't made plans for this, I don't know. She wasn't a long time ahead of her due date when she went into labor.

my mother didn't know she was pregnant with twins 7th and 8th baby until she was 4 months. she had just had a baby, and thought the feeling of tiredness, and sickness was from having so many children so close together. she still had her period as well. they were born full term 12 1/2 months after child no 6.

when she did realize she was pregnant, she thought she was having twins. ( mostly because they were fighting with each other all the time in her stomach. the doctor refused to believe her. even when she had delivered one of the twins , the doctor still refused to believe there was another baby coming. the nurse continued to say well, what is that big lump then. remember this was a while ago, before ultrasounds were around.

maybe they should have a show about when the doctor doesn't believe you !!

While I do agree most didn't have the normal symptoms, I can't believe a young mom of 3 didn't recongnize the symptoms of pregnancy and then labor! I can see your point @ the 52 yo who thought she was through menopause. That makes sense. But this other woman? Either denial or she wanted to be on TV lol.

I have never watched the show, but I just can't imagine not knowing you are pregnant.

I have thought about this many times because the birth mother of my first dd did not know she was pregnant until she gave birth. She was 16 and her mother took her to the ER because she thought she had pain from a severe bladder infection. Instead she gave birth to an almost 8 lb. baby girl. I honestly think she was in denial. She was not a tall or heavy girl. I have never understood how neither she nor her mother knew she was pregnant.

When I'm pregnant I look VERY pregnant and my babies always moved a lot. I just can't understand how you don't know there is a baby in there.

Oh, come now. There are many shows about things that are neither unusual nor hard to believe.

:)

I have met some women who are super hawkish with regard to being able to detect pregnancy. Case in point: with my first, I didn't really volunteer around to strangers that I was pregnant. I went to a dinner, and this old lady I'd never met before immediately knew. Some friends of mine who were there were surprised. Another friend ran into one lady who said to her, "Are you pregnant? Your breasts look bigger" (yeah, I know), and she said no. Turns out she'd JUST CONCEIVED. There should be more such women running around; maybe some women would be spared the "surprise" indigestion/labor pains.

Actually, fetal movement is a standard symptom and what some of these women experience are non-standard - that's why they didn't know. I'm sure some were in denial or had some mental health issues, but for some they had totally non standard pregnancies: bleeding every month, little weight gain, little movement from the baby, no morning sickness or mood changes.

They, looking back, will sometimes say "so that's what that was!!) but while they were going through it, it could be explained by something else and because, like you, they thought that being pregnant would entail: FEELING the baby move, big belly, leaking or enlarged breasts!

If they felt those things like you did, then they would have known they were pregnant. :)

What I don't get is that other obvious symptoms happen... like much darker n*pples and enlarged "downstairs". Unless those are not so common, I don't get how someone would not notice those difference????

These didn't happen to me, or at least I didn't notice them, and I AM obsessed with every possible pregnancy symptom.

And to everyone, remember that every pregnancy can be different. That's why I think some of the mothers who had previous children thought they couldn't be pregnant, because they didn't feel the same as they did in previous pregnancies.

And not recognizing baby kicks...if you're very busy and not looking for them, I can see how they could be missed, or mistaken for gas!

I too am slightly envious of women who do not know they are pregnant...I'm sure my husband wishes I could be more like them!

I have an aunt who didn't know she was pregnant until about 6 mos in. She had an irregular cycle and continued to bleed throughout her pregnancy. She also had many physical issues, and the doctor had told her she'd never have more children. On top of that she was overweight, so never did look pregnant. So yeah, I can see how it happens.

I've also had two different women tell me this week that they never looked pregnant with their children. They're both larger women and they said they didn't gain much pregnancy weight, and never had pregnancy bellies. So again, that's something that happens.

I also think a lot of people are quite out of touch with their bodies in general. So if you are really not paying attention to anything that is happening with you physically, experience a lack of weight gain, stress related physical symptoms, distractions of a busy life, low/no expectation of pregnancy, irregular cycles, no idea what to expect, low-symptom pregnancy, etc.... Yeah, I can see how it happens!
