Recommendations for 6yo?

Ok, I've read quite a few threads here about the K/1st graders and I really need some planning help! We're part of a homeschooling program and receive educational funds for our children. I'm trying to decide what to order for the fall.

I'm hoping to follow TWTM pretty closely, as it makes a lot of sense to me and I wish that I could've been educated that way! However, ds will be 6 in the fall, so I don't want to overdo it with him.

Here's the plan:

LA:

Continue reading from the early readers each day

Copywork

Should I begin FLL and Spelling Workout? We just finished our phonics primer and ds is reading at the 1st level.

Math:

Earlybird Singapore

Continue playing a lot of math games

History (2xs week):

Begin SOTW 1 and Activity Guide

Narration

Science (2xs per week):

DK First book of Animals

Narration

Lots of library books on chosen animal for the week

Butterfly habitat

Grow-a-frog

Literature (daily):

I read to ds from children's versions of classics recommended by TWTM

Should I add in Artistic Pursuits yet? Song School Latin yet?

Would you wait on all of this and just do another year of K (math and reading only)?

Thanks for the help.

You're getting funding? That's pretty neat. For us...we my ds will be 6 in August...the very END of August, so he could either be in K or 1st according to our cut-off date. I'm choosing to call it K but at the rate we're going, we'll start 1st grade material (history, science, spelling....) in January. We part time school over the summer (object in motion stays in motion!). Right now we just do lots of reading, printing/handwriting, math and that's about it. Good luck!

I would do some sort of phonetic spelling and also phonics review.

My favorite is Webster's Speller, it teaches to a 12th grade reading level!

I now have a guide to use Webster's Speller along with Blend Phonics that includes spelling and syllable division, it's on my how to tutor page (they were written for volunteers at my church so they can continue with tutoring after my move this summer, but they can be easily adapted to a single child.)

I started 1st grade just focusing on the Bible, math and spelling (my daughter was reading very well after finishing Webster's Speller in K, so we didn't need much phonics, we just did a bit of review.) We also did Chemistry once a week and the always loved animal studies (fun, not considered school, and usually done outside our normal school hours.)

In January, we added Spanish, Grammar, and Geography.

This is us too. Ok, so you're starting the 1st recs in January. Good, because I'm really looking forward to beginning SOTW! And ds does really well with structure, so I like having direction.

Would you mind telling me why you're waiting until January? I was thinking that this may be a possible way to go for us too, beginning a new grade in the half year due to ds birthday.

I'm choosing to call it K as well because our charter requires state testing beginning in 2nd, and I am not ready for that.

Thanks, Elizabeth! You'd wait on the science and history, then? Should I wait until ds is reading well before beginning grammar and spelling?
