Just found out that dd's co-op (private school that has homeschool classes) will be using SOTW 3 next year. She only goes one day a week and the history class is 1 hour and 15 min. I believe they cover two chapters a week and much of the outside work and reading is up to us parents. Here's my question....I don't want to do two chapters a week...its too fast for us and I fear things will get lost in the hurried time frame..however I want my daughter to have read the chapters before going to class each week. How do I handle this? If I go one chapter a week we will be too far behind. Do I read the two chapters to her for the next class and only focus on one to cover more in depth? Any amazing ideas out there? I believe in class they do the maps, some coloring sheets, discussion and a project/related craft each week.

When they say two chapters, do they mean sections maybe?

In SOTW, each chapter is divided into 2 or 3 sections. Normally you would cover all sections but only the one chapter per week.

It does seem like a lot for them to covering two whole chapters per week. This would make learning and understanding difficult.

If this is the case and they are going to cover two chapters, not sections, per week, then I would definitely invest in the SOTW CDs (read by Jim Weiss). This way you can listen in the car, during meals, et cetera.

go ahead and do the two chapters per week. I think the accountability to have a project provided by someone else would be wonderful. (I would also prefer one chapter per week). I would have her choose one section to write a narration on each week (or maybe one from each chapter, depending on her writing skills). Then, when the co-op was over, and over the summer, I would listen to the whole thing on CD together and stop and hit some of the things that didn't get enough attention. I would probably do a little more in-depth at home about the revolutionary war and US history at that time. But, it sounds like a great experience, and I think it would be confusing to be at one pace at home and another at the co-op.

I am pretty sure that they have to cover two chapters a week in order to get it all in for the school year. This drives me crazy but I do commend them for using SOTW and providing this opportunity for homeschooled kids. The director/principal of the private school homeschooled for many years and has a passion for providing opportunities for homeschool families. THe idea about the CD is great. I also like the idea of reading the chapters to her but picking a few topics like American History to go more in depth on at home. DD will only be 1st grade and I know many kids in school that get little to no history at that age. Thanks again and I will make sure to visit the class often so I can have a better understanding of how it is working.

After rereading my post it sounds a bit choppy in thought...oh well..any computer time is rushed around here...we start school in five minutes.
