SS in MD
I recently bought Chalkdust Geometry used and assumed the books would come with a outline of how to schedule the lessons w/the DVDs. I had a few questions regarding the book & scheduling - 1) I noticed in the student book an icon that looks like a book with "SSG" written inside the icon and then Ex "1-3" (or what ever numbers). What does this refer to?? I looked through the book and can't find it. 2) How did you dc do the program daily? Did dc read the chapter first or just a section then watch the DVD, and then do problems (how many)? I'm not quite sure how to set things up. Thank you so much for your help! :)

If you bought it used, you can purchase technical support from Chalkdust. Then you can email Dana Mosely (or call him). That was wonderful, geometry was between my son and Dana Mosely! Hoggirl
We schedule math for one hour per day. Ds watches the DVD and then works problems for the rest of the time. The next day he keeps working problems. When that section is complete he watches the next DVD. We took one or days to review at the end of each chapter (there are review problems as well) and one day to test. If you spend and *average* of three days per section you can finish the text in a year. Some sections take more time, some less. Your goal is an *average* of three days. We did refer to the book occasionally for explanations, but primarily just listened to Professor Mosely's lectures. I chose between 25 and 30 problems per section. It is a little trickier selecting them in the Geometry book b/c they are not broken out by sub-sections. You can't necessarily just pick the first 25 or 30 or you might not pick up all the concepts, kwim? HTH. I do not know about the "SSG" - I will try and look later. Right now my wet hair is about to get to the point of no return so I best go dry it! :D

plansrme
This may sound condescending, and it's not meant to be, but scheduling CD isn't nearly as complicated as it might seem at first glance. I've scheduled 2 years of CD math, Alg. II and Geometry, to be done over 2 years, and I start at the beginning of each book, write out daily assignments (alternating chapters), including tests, study days and periodic catch-up days, and it just works out in the end. I just check at the half-way point to make sure that I am slightly more than half-way through the book (I schedule more at the beginning, on the grounds that it is a lot of review). If I am where I need to be at my check points, I'm on track and keep going. I organize by the sections in the book so a typical week might look like this: M: DVD for 3.2; start problems T: Finish problems for 3.2. W: DVD for 3.3, start problems. Th: Finish 3.3 problems, review for mid-chapter quiz F: Mid-chapter quiz, DVD for 3.4. I write out the schedule for the entire year, and my daughter's never gotten off-track, struggled to keep up or gone too slowly, and she finishes the books by the end of the school year. It just works. She does odd problems in geometry, every other odd in Alg. 2. The geometry sections and lectures are short, so you could probably do the lecture and the problems on the same day, but we didn't need to. She does not read the chapter before the lecture. Susan C.
Cynthia and Terri, Are you using the traditional geometry from Chalkdust? If so, doing odd problems will be a great help to me, in CD I never know what problems to assign. And do you both use the tests in the book, or make up your own? I had ds do more than just the odd problems, however. But, not all of the problems. So, sometimes I would have him do #'s 1- 20 and then the rest of the odds, depending on how many problems were in a section. I wanted between 25 and 30 per section. Sometimes he did 32 or so. I did use the tests from the book, but I will say they are on the "easy" side. The daily work was more demanding than the tests were. I wish there were tests provided that were more representative of the level of work required.
cmpet7
I am considering using chalkdust geometry for my 9th grader. I don't remember geometry very well and I don't have time to watch the DVD's with my child. Are the solutions clear enough in the solutions manual for me to help if there's a problem? Just wondering before I buy. Thanks.

As far as whether we have traditional or new, we have traditional. The question about whether the mom would have to watch the DVDs--I don't, and I've always been able to figure out any issues with just the solution's manual. My daughter is an excellent math student, however, and my first, so I don't know if I could get away with this for all students. If not, we e-mailed Professor Mosely for technical support (since we bought it new from him it is included. If you buy it used you can purchase technical support for $75 per year). Susan C.
Terri & Cynthia, We thought the tests were hard, now where is that little face with a scowl on it, I haven't figured how to do that yet! Thanks for your ideas about traditional! Wish me luck, doing again next year with my daughter who has never done CD before.... but she likes geometry.
