JABarney
Hi. I imagine that most of us who homeschool, integrate health education into our daily lives. However, I am wondering if anyone has come across a fun program that they would like to share? I prefer secular curriculum and of course am only looking at elementary level programs so far, but any and all programs you have seen, tried, liked, disliked I would love to hear about! Thanks! ~Kirsten~
We have to show something specific for health for the state here in Maryland, so I choose Healthy Me, available from Amazon. It has 5 different categories, including teeth, nutrition, cleanliness, safety, and exercise, with many different activities and lessons in each category. Since it is aimed at children ages 5-8, my plan is to do a few lessons from each category over several years. I think it should be fun and painless, plus it was quite inexpensive when I consider that I should get several years from it. There are definitely several reasonable options out there. Good luck finding what will work for you! :001_smile:

HollyDay
There doesnt seem to be much options out there. I have used Abeka and it is okay. In the upper elementary - it gets more of a science feel though. Memorizing bones and structures of the body and such just overlaps too much with our science program. I like the look of Health Quest and another offering by Alpha Omega. But, I have only seen them online and not in person. But, if I cant find anything else I like and making up my own doesnt work, I might consider that. I am seriously thinking about making up my own. I know I want dc to get CPR training and basic first aid. We can get that locally through our Fire Dept or hospital. Other than that, I am going to make a list of what I want to include in health - not science - but health. This changes as the children grow - obviously. Then I can find books or information that will meet those goals. Our pediatrician's office and dentist office have lots of great free pamphlets and such. The local diabetic nutrition office also had some very helpful handouts - all free. The pharmacy too has quite a few free helpful handouts. Just a thought
sagira
Yikes how did this happen.. double post. Oh well, I can add about that great Dr. Sears book: Eat Healthy, Feel Great :)
sagira
My Corebook includes outlines in geography and health. I'm using these lesson plans (36 weeks of them) to teach ds about health in first grade. It's actually called Health and Safety. It's pretty thorough, especially for something you don't expect! I like freebies :) I have a great book on eating well and will throw in a book about fitness. As of now, ds is a ball of energy so we don't have to worry too much about the moving part ;)

swellmomma
We have been using Abeka up until this point because I got them dirt cheap a few years ago. Now that the kids are getting older though I find I am including health topics more into our studies than I did when they were younger. For example, while teaching home ec cooking I include a lot about nutrition. Fitness is discussed regularily and we keep active. NExt year my focus is on first aid, WWYD scenario's and puberty. Neither are old enough to actually take a certified first aid course yet but we will be covering the basics at home. my 1st grader will do abeka health like the others did in the past.
