My dc's printer died and I am thinking of giving them my HP and getting me a new one. I looked at Staples the other day and was looking at these with the new print technology. When I read the reviews, seemed they were mixed.

Supposedly they cost much less for the ink refills as they last much longer. Just wondering if anyone has these and their opinions.

Specifically, I was looking at the HP L7580. I thought the feeder might be nice for copies, etc.

The wonderful thing about individual ink tanks is the ability to replace only the color which has run out.

The printers with all-in-one inks will run out of one color (black for example, if you print a fair number of b/w documents) and you must toss the entire cartridge. Never mind that the cyan and magenta are still full, or nearly so.

I don't have any information on specific HP printers (we use Canon and Epson), but I would certainly choose individual inks regardless of the brand you decide to buy.

Is there a better choice?

My husband is a photographer, and uses all Canon equipment. We tend to be brand-loyal (for better or for worse) so we chose to buy Canon for our desktop printer.

Epson is the brand we use for our large format printers.

I can't say these are the better choice, as I haven't researched the others much.

I just get so tired of running out of ink. The HP I am looking at has an XL black cartridge which looks pretty large.

On the other hand, I'm ready to toss a still functional HP printer (F380 All in One) that came bundled with our computer because it consumes so much ink. Even though we print everything on Fast Draft, it goes through a cartridge in just a couple weeks. At $15-20 per inkpot, that is more than I can afford. This printer has almost completely turned me off of HP printers.

It now sits next to my desk for use as a scanner. I bought a HP1006 laser printer (not color), because the cost of toner was so much less per page compared to the inkjets. We have an HP PSC2110 that uses far less ink than the F380. I use that for the times I REALLY need color.

And, if I had it all to do over again, I would get a laser color multifunction printer. Yes, the toner is expensive, but it last for thousands of pages.
