mamaluvs2hs
Hi, I am trying to decide what to use for ds next year and could use some input. I've been planning to use BJU's 10th grade DVD English and Biology, but now I'm having second thoughts about the English. My main reason for wanting to use BJU is for the literature instruction. I don't need the writing portion of it. Ds used Write at Home last year and it worked very well so I've already signed him up for it this year. I guess we could do Write at Home and BJU writing, but I'm afraid that might be a bit much for my reluctant writer. So, my question is, Can BJU english be used without the writing? Would it even be worth it to spend the money for the dvd program while skipping the writing portion? Thanks, Mel
1shortmomto4
The BJU DVD courses for English are semester courses - you work through the literature portion first (or second) and then you work through the English/Writing portion. In the English/Writing portion you could just do the grammar lessons as the writing lessons are usually one "day" and then you assign a due date for the written assignment. The DVDs are labeled so you know where to start. The scheduling and hands-outs, etc. are also divided between literature and english/writing. I'm currently using this for my 9th grader and he worked through the Lit portion and he just watches the lessonf for the grammar portions and I do something entirely different for writing. It is expensive to use just the literature portion - I'm personally trying to figure out a different option but my son needs the visual lessons that the DVD provide. I honestly wish they'd allow you to purchase just the Lit or just the English/Grammar portion - easiest enough to do when you read the labels on the DVDs. You've helped me so much. :) I agree that it would be nice if I could purchase just the lit portion. If that were possible, I would go with something entirely different for grammar. As is, it is to expensive to not use the majority of the program. Thanks for your help. I feel better now knowing that the writing can be skipped without a lot of hassle. I really think that ds will do better having someone else teach lit analysis.
Susan C.
If you are buying the two classes at $399 each, it is cheaper just to get whole grade at $999. You get more books and classes, then you don't feel bad about not watching all of the DVDs. And you can sell what you don't need.

Just to avoid confusion.

The only problem is that I would only be using those two courses. I've already got Notgrass world history and Math Relief Algebra. I might possibly use the bible, but I'm not sure. If I sold the books would I be able to get enough back to make it worth it? Grr....I don't know what to do. If only BJU didn't charge so much for the seperate subjects.. Grr....I don't know what to do. If only BJU didn't charge so much for the seperate subjects.. OK, another suggestion. A Beka World Literature is one of our favorite lit books. We did it w/o the DVDs and it was a great course. There is another review of it on one of the lit. threads. Then you can do your own writing. We have used the BJUP Writing/Grammar workbooks without dvds as well, and they have plenty of explanation. Then for Biology, you can get the single course. If you want to go even cheaper, we have used Apologia Biology and really like it. And there is a free online class for it we are looking into virtualhomeschoolinggroup.com. Their biology class starts tomorrow, but you can enter at any time, with the exceptions of modules 5-8, they have to be taken in sequence, and module 5 starts in September. Hope this helps! I have an upcoming 10th grader as well! Susan
