yarrow
For the last several weeks we've had little sugar type ants coming down the wall from behind the cabinets and onto the countertops. At first, I just wiped everything down with white vinegar and made sure everything was super clean. That didn't stop them so I went out and bought Terro. The terro traps are interesting in a gross way because for the 1st two days the amount of ants is astonishing. Then they disappear. For about a week. Then they're back again. This has been going on for weeks. There's not been sign of a single ant for days and days and this afternoon I have seen hundreds. What to do? Suggestions other than calling an exterminator (which I'm about ready to do). The kitchen is above a garage (walk-out basement type of thing) so I can't really sprinkle anything outside around the foundation.
Twinmom
If they are the type of ants we have, they are extremely hard to get rid of. You have to locate and kill the ant hill out in the yard...and they are hard to find. Do call an exterminator and save yourself some hassle! They can barrier-treat the outside of the house and spend some time looking for/destroying the ant hills themselves. I call them sugar ants, too...though in our house, they seem to prefer the tooth brushes! :glare:
SquirrellyMama
We have those ants this time of year also. I usually spray with the Terro ant spray around the windows, door, baseboards in the kitchen and near the kitchen sink. I generally only have to do that twice, once in May and once in June. They are awful. I've waited too long before and had them in my cabinets.
newbie
My second vinegar tip of the day. Wipe area w/straight vinegar and you can spray outside of house w/vinegar too.
creekland
I'm just going to echo the first poster's response... call an exterminator and get started against them. They are probably odiferous ants... google it and see what you are up against.
Melissa in CA
I just heard from someone yesterday that they (ants) hate dryer sheets and that if you put some out they will hi-tail it back to their home. This could be a complete falsehood, but hey, you can try it I suppose. I personally second the exterminator. We purchased property, developed it and the minute we moved into our new home we were overcome with ants. It was horrible!! I had them coming out of electrical sockets even...they were everywhere! If I left a cup of ice cream on a counter for any length of time I would come back to it overrun with ants. Have not had single ant episode in our home since the very first exterminator visit six years ago. We also never have spiders or thier lovely webs in our home. I hate spiders! :tongue_smilie: He has only come sprayed in the house 2x...the very first time and then one other time just because I wanted him too. The rest of the time it's around the house. yarrow
with absolute certainty that white vinegar does not work against these ants. I routinely wipe the counters down with vinegar. I'm about to try boric acid/sugar combo until Monday when I'll call an exterminator.

We're in NH, too..... if that matters. :tongue_smilie:
yarrow
what boric acid/sugar recipe did you use? There are so many on the internet that it's hard to know what the ratio should be.
