Mom2legomaniacs Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 After the week I had, it was decided that an outing would be in order. So, dh was taking the kids geo-caching and wanted me to go too. I decided to go. It was a lot of fun! The warm temps really helped a lot. It was cool to do a little treasure hunt like that. If you get a chance, do it! Quote
Jenstet Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 We love geocahcing. The kids call it treasure hunting. Everyone can join in. We won't be going for awhile yet. Another 8 inches on the ground. Quote
K&Rs Mom Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Try letterboxing too - the same kind of thing but using a compass & clues instead of GPS. K asked me today when we could go again (I said maybe if the snow ever melts). It's more like a pirate treasure hunt than geocaching. The one we did last September even had rhyming clues! :) Start at http://www.letterboxing.org Quote

Mom2legomaniacs Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 So what is geo-caching? It is an outdoor treasure hunt using a GPS unit. You go to a site and download the information into your GPS unit. Then use the unit to go on a treasure hunt. The cache is a waterproof box or something of the sort containing a log (to show when you found it and who you are -- usually a moniker) and sometimes some trinkets. With the trinkets, the idea is to leave something behind (sometimes you can take a trinket with you if it is something cute your kids like but you need to leave something in return for certain). We went to an area around here that had a total of 7 caches. Some were small -- only a log of visitors. Some had trinkets. We left some little rubber frogs behind. In some cases, we took one thing from one and transferred it to another after leaving the frog in the first one. It was fun! Quote
