Report on TT Precalculus

Recommended Posts

DD took her COMPASS Math placement test today and tested into Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1. She had just completed TT Precalculus. I had been concerned that TT was not going to prepare her, but it has obviously worked well for her. She did better on the College Algebra questions than the Trigonometry questions though. Posting this for those considering TT.

Just to encourage you...my dd also tested into Calculus at age 16 on the COMPASS at the CC, but we chose to start with College Algebra. She was SIXTEEN. :) So, there was no rush to Calculus, and plenty of time for more math. She took College Algebra in Spring 2007, PreCalculus in Fall 2007, Calculus I in Spring 2008, and Statistics in Summer 2008. She graduated from the CC with an Associate of Arts in August 2008, moved over to the university, and will graduate with a BA in Mathematics in December 2009 at age 20. (At the university thus far she's taken Calc II, Calc III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Transitions to Higher Math, Mathematical Statistics, Modern Algebra and Advanced Calculus...and she still has a 4.0 cumulative GPA.)

I honestly don't think she was ready for Calc I at 16. It was *great* for her to review all aspects of algebra and trigonometry in College Algebra/PreCalculus from the very rigorous text her CC used for those subjects, and at a college pace, before moving into the Calculus sequence. YMMV. :)

Lori, I agree with you. I think she'll start with College Algebra or Precal. :) For her degree she'll actually only need College Algebra....that might be an easy A for her to keep her GPA up.

Thanks, Beth, I am proud of her..... I like your new pic. :)

It's just encouraging that TT can work for some kids.

Yes, PLEASE do that, my son did place into calculus for college, got his first ever "c" first semester, then failed Calc. 2 this semester. The adjustment to college, and the fact it was twice as fast did him in and he is a good student. And, he may be in trouble with that to take for the second required math class, someone suggested PreCalc first in case this happened, should have listened! This college doesn't let you go backwards in level, once you take lets say a 141, then the rest have to be after that.

This is good to hear. I am so impressed with TT Precalculus. I am also greatly impressed with the support that the people at TT give. I'm looking forward to trading in all my CDs for the full program when those CDs are ready. I think it's a wonderfully adequate program for almost all students, though certainly not as meaty as Chalk Dust.
