angela&4boys
This looks very thorough and I appreciate the Creationist perspective. Hoping someone will chime in with their thoughts...
Ellie
I love R&S science. :-) I prefer the newer God's World science series, which begins at 3rd grade with God's Protected World, and goes through...7th? ::thinking, thinking:: Whatever, lol. I haven't *used* them, you understand, I've just reviewed them. Anyway, the older science books are ok but they are a little dry; it's easy to spice them up, although they don't cover as much as the God's World series does. Nicole M
We have used R&S science for grades 3 - 6 so far. Since we are unlikely candidates, I always feel like I'm coming out of the closet when I talk about it. What I like: the topics are covered with increasing complexity over time, through the years, in an age appropriate manner. A healthy relationship to the creation and environment, and responsible use of resources, care and concern for the world are emphasized throughout. The layout is clean and not visually overwhelming. The investigations are designed for teachers in a rural setting, so they are totally do-able with ordinary kitchen and garage equipment. The one downside for us is that in these more advanced books the God-did-everything aspect is really starting to get heavy-handed and tiresome. It's beginning to be distracting from the content, so we may or may not continue for next year, 7th. They are fine books and I'm surprised that more folks don't use them. ETA: These are nice to have alongside the text: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0880128534/ref=ox_ya_oh_product and http://www.amazon.com/100-Life-Science-Daryl-Vriesenga/dp/0880128283/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b We did almost everything orally in the early years, then I slowly added in written work and these worksheets. PollyOR
We use them here and like them. :) My 11 yo and I read them aloud (she needs the practice), and she answers the questions orally. I appreciate the amount of review in every lesson. We aren't doing the experiments/activities at this time, but my kids and I are learning a lot. :thumbup1:
Guest 4boys
No user experience yet, but I just want to chime in that I bought Patterns of Nature (the Gr. 2 book) and we'll be starting it in a few months. I love how it looks and I think my boys are really going to like it!

I forgot to mention that I also like the way the vocabulary is laid out. For additional review, we use flashcards (definitions on one color and words on another) to play go fish or other games. I am not a science person, so my impulse here is not fully informed, but based on my own experiences. I think what would have helped me immensely as a kid would have been to have a basic vocabulary, a language to talk about science concepts. I kinda-sorta, in a fuzzy way, knew sciency words. So I have been a stickler about learning the vocab. Also, if you look at "standard" texts, the vocabulary is awfully complicated and, imho, unnecessarily so. I like the way that the R&S vocabulary, like all the material, builds each year in complexity.

angela&4boys
Wow ladies, this is encouraging. I viewed the samples and was impressed with the vocabulary and the review as you pointed out. I have been trying to keep my guys together, but the age difference is showing and their 2yo db is not getting any less disruptive.:tongue_smilie: And Ellie, I always appreciate your thoughts... Queen Mama Homeschooler. ;) Prayer time...
