Mamasteff
Rising 6th grader will be expected to read some of the Odyssey, Gilgamesh, Plutarch... (just as a start). We already own a set of the Great Books. Should I use these, or are there "better" translations we should be looking at? Thanks!
Nicole M
Rising 6th grader will be expected to read some of the Odyssey, Gilgamesh, Plutarch... (just as a start). We already own a set of the Great Books. Should I use these, or are there "better" translations we should be looking at? Thanks! I personally like the Fagles translation of the Odyssey. There's a wonderful audio version of the Fagles read by a fellow whose name I forget. As for Gilgamesh, you might search the HS board for suggestions about translations. Some are decidedly more raunchy than others. I believe there was a discussion of that recently over there. Can't help with Plutarch.... Are you using a study guide from a particular source for these books? They might recommend particular translations.
dangermom
The Plutarch translation in the Brit. GB is not easy to read; it's quite an old-fashioned one. I plan to get a more modern version when we get to that age.
