Does any body else feel that the majority of the recs in WTM focus on Animals? What about plants and humans? It's there, but I feel it may be lacking. Does it just seem that way on paper, but once we begin doing it, it's thorough? Ideas? Comments?

Any body add more study of plants during nature walks? Pressing plants? Also, more study of the human anatomy? What did you do? How did you supplement? What were your best resources/purchases?

Thanks,

Danielle

This year with my 5th grader I used Mr Q's biology book as a spine. It did have animals, but it approached it differently. There was a lot in there my 5th grader had not really looked at before (like cells, biomes, etc.), so even though the reading level was low for him, we used it and I beefed it up. I had already done the WTM animals thing with him, which we loved, and which I was doing again this year with my 2nd grader, so I don't feel he was "cheated". He liked following along with his younger brother as well, and I gave him his own worksheet and such to do on whatever animals we were studying.

What about choosing a different book as a spine? I need to pull out my copy of WTM to see the recs for 5th grade, I don't remember offhand...

Thanks. I will have a younger ds in the same rotation, but my oldest likes to do things on his own. He will do projects with us, but I think following along with his younger brother may not be as in depth as he needs. He is very familiar with those books since we have had them in the house for him and our middle ds. They have often gone back to look at the UAE for fun. Will the Minds Eye that is listed in the book really provide enough work in the area? Anybody use it yet?

I did a half year of animal kingdoms/classification, emphasizing microbiology more this year. I also included a LOT more worksheets, etc. for reinforcement. Like Kate, I used Mr. Q's info as review/reinforcement throughout the year.

I have been covering the human body during the second half of the year, again, including more written work this time around.

I have interspersed a botany study throughout the year, using a unit study by Kym Wright, available through Rainbow Resource Center, and a lab notebook that I created for use with that study.
