bizzymomof5
My oldest, a 16 year old, is wanting to do Abeka or BJU for this fall. Would it be way to teacher intensive without the dvd program? I would be getting him the 10th grade, maybe 11th. I have 4 younger children to homeschool as well. Would the 6th, 8th, and 9th grades be to difficult and time consuming to be done without the dvd program? I'm pretty sure I will do Winterpromise with the 4 younger kids, but my 16 year old son really wants to do the Abeka or BJU dvd. I could afford the textbooks and teacher manuals, etc. Not sure I could swing the dvd program. KWIM? I guess I will post this on the high school board as well since I'm asking about high school to. Thanks, Tracy
PeterPan
Do you realize the BJU dvd or hard drive options INCLUDE the textbooks, tm's, etc.? Not only do they include them, but they're yours to keep, meaning you can sell them off afterward and recoup part of your money!
Ellie
Nope. I think he could totally do it on his own. If you do BJUP (my first choice) you could get just the TMs for literature, history and science, which have the complete student text in them. LisaS
Not sure about high school grades, but I have used Abeka from pre-K through 3rd grade and have not even used teachers manuals. It does not take a lot of teacher preparation.
bizzymomof5
Abeka told me that you don't get the TM's with the dvd program unless you purchase them separtely. Does BJU include the TM's in the price of the dvd program? Thanks Tracy

Thanks Tracy Yes, the TMs are included in the price of the DVD and hard drive options. Here is a link to their FAQ page that explains it better. Melissa in CA
The nice thing about BJU's DVDs though is that rarely does one need the TMs, especially in high school. The teachers do a great job of instructing and supplying everything you, the teaching parent, need to do your part. My understanding is that BJU's new online option will not include the TMs, but I don't believe the other two options have been changed to reflect the same. Also, I just wanted to clarify that BJU's high school levels, in my opinion, are very teacher intensive. BJU ramps things up quite a bit in high school and if your child has not been using BJU for several years prior, he may find himself struggling to stay afloat. The DVDs make the transition easier, I think, because the teacher's are very thorough. Yet, my boys struggled mightily in BJU Writing & Grammar even with the wonderful Mrs. Vick (BJU teacher) teaching them.

I'd not start him in the 11th grade level if he's not had BJU materials before. My oldest ds did the BJU DVD program. It was a lot of work, but very good and very thorough! I think my ds would have really struggled without the dvd's! They just bring it to life and make it so much more understandable, interesting and less tedious! IMHO, I'd try to knock something else out of the curric so I could afford the dvd's---they're worth the cost!!!
sue
I think that it would depend on the subject. We used the DVD's with Spanish 1. I could not teach Spanish nearly as well.

Yes do keep that in mind - that you are ALSO getting Spanish or French with a teacher on DVDs. Although i can relate to still not being able to afford the DVD package. The online option has a payment plan, but you have to buy TWO grade levels to take advantage of it (which stinks).
