momtotkbb
Has anyone ever used TT as a supplement or review along with another math program? Our accountability group really isn't a fan of TT for most kids ---but my ds who is turning 11 and will be 5th grade thinks it looks fun. I want a program that we can use over the summer more independently. We will then pick back up with BJU Math in the fall and I would let him use TT maybe 1 day a week, over breaks, or as a "game" for review. He likes using the computer, likes to solve problems in his head, is gifted, but LD/ADHD gets in the way for quickly grasping some concepts. This year we've been using BJU 4th and Horizons 3 as his supplement.
usetoschool
I am using TT7 in addition to Singapore for my 4th grader. From what I have seen, many people use multiple math programs. They all teach in a slightly different way or put an emphasis on different topics. We are using it because TT7 is a very slow and very thorough explanation of basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals etc. and I want my son to have a good foundation before we get into algebra type stuff. It is a math text though, each lesson builds on the previous and there is a full years worth of lessons so if you did it once a week he would take a couple years to get through a grade level. It isn't a pick and choose review or game type program or a supplement. Think Saxon except they read the lesson to you and the samples are interactive. And if you get the answer wrong you have the option of watching an explanation. We just do the 5 or 6 samples because that is enough understanding for my son most of the time. If he gets a sample problem wrong though, he does some of the lesson problems until he understands. There are about 20 problems per lesson. Brindee
Yeah, it's a full-year program, so I'm not sure what would be accomplished by doing it once a week??? My dd did the TT Pre-Algebra in 5th grade and did well with it and enjoyed it. Make sure he takes a placement test so you know what level to get for him, based on what you want him to get from the program.
Melissa in CA
Have you looked into Aleks math? It's an online math program that my son used over the summer last year and really enjoyed. He was able to pick what area of math he wanted to work on from a pie chart made for him after an online evaluation test, so it's not quite as textbooky as TT would be. I think you can get a free 30 day trial if you phone them. After that I believe it's $19 a month or there 'bouts and you can cancel at any time. momtotkbb
Thanks ---he would do it every day over the summer, but then only do a few lessons a week during Sept - May. I don't care if he doesn't complete it all. We used TT Math 7 the first year it was out for dd for 5th grade and she easily completed it in 1/2 year, but was bored to tears after coming from Abeka. After the first month, I just selected which probs for her to complete and made a list for each lesson --so that's what I had thought of for him. We tried a free trial of ALEKs last year and he didn't like it --but he likes the TT samples he's completed.
Melissa in CA
Well, it sounds like you've answered your own question. :D

It's always interesting to see the differences in what works and what doesn't work for kids!:001_smile:
