Guest mommy2ava
Hi everyone, I really need your input. Will be homeschooling my 5th grader for the 1st time this year. I need some of your help with some of the curriculum that I am thinking about. Spelling: Spelling wkout G (6th grade) or ACSI? My daughter is a great speller, and I looked online and the grade up for both of these seems like it would be ok. Do you like one over the other? Wordly wise or vocab from classical roots? Would you stick with her grade level or go up one? Science: Apologia Zoology 3 or BJU science 5? If anyone has done zoology 3, do I also need to purchase the lab kit, or would I make it w/o it? Kind of overwhelmed. Any suggestions would be soo welcomed. Thanks
Kate in Arabia
My current 5th grader is finishing up Spelling Workout F. He is also a natural speller; he actually does really well with the spelling, but I've noticed in particular with level F that there are more words in the list that he can spell, but doesn't always know the definition. This was never an issue with earlier levels. So I've started having him look up and write the definitions of list words, which is also his handwriting practice. So even though he handily will ace the spelling tests, I'm still happy that we went through F. He completes the work almost entirely on his own (except for tests and the occasional question). Have you looked at some word lists from each level? Maybe you could test out a few on your up-coming 5th grader and see how it fits? hth! mazakaal
My 5th grader is doing SWO F and doing fine with it. Is your dc in 5th now or going into 5th? I'm not familiar with ACSI, so I can't comment on that, but we're happy with SWO. I use WW right now, but plan to switch to Vocab from the Classical Roots in 7th. You could go with either and probably not go wrong. I'm also doing Zoo 3 with my 5th grader. We're very happy with it, though I wish that I had given us more time to complete it. It's got a lot in it. I had done the other Apologia Elementary series in about 18 weeks each, and thought this would require the same, but I wish that we had a whole year to devote to it. I didn't get the lab kit and don't think it's necessary unless you really want the convenience of it. I'm not familiar with BJU science, so I can't comment on that either.
