Can any one please help me? I pulled my ds out of ps about a month ago.. We are new to hsing. I chose the school of tomorrow paces. We have been working on them for about a week. Today I realized that some of what the paces teach, I do not agree with.. My problem is that I am not sure we should continue to use them.. I do not want him to get what I consider to be the wrong biblical teaching. Do I switch and if so, what do I use? Would it be better to use a non-christian based teaching and then teach the bible by itself? I am just needing opinions on how others do both .. I want a good solid curriculum that is easily understood. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Oh, my son is 12 and we live in N.C.

He fell behind in math and L.arts. Now we have to play catch up.. Thanks Again..

I don't really like what I have seen of the Paces books, so I would probably ditch them and find some other materials that suit you better.

If your son likes to read you could consider Sonlight. They are Christian, but I think they have their views listed on the web site, so you can see if you would find anything objectionable. http://www.sonlight.com/

Or, can you just discuss your beliefs with your son and continue with the paces? Twelve seems old enough to understand that there are different views. I know I do this with my dc.

FarrahFace, just curious. Can you give some examples of wrong biblical teaching? I've thought about using pieces of this program, too.

If you only have problems with the Bible portion, maybe you could pick up something else. We like Voyages from cph.org or Rod & Staff.

Many of us here like to pick and choose various components of curriculum that we enjoy or will work for our kids rather than straight workbook programs. If you post something like: What did you use this year for 6th grade (or whatever grade), you should get some helpful responses. Ask which were their favorites and research from there.

My dh said he used these in private school when he was younger. He says to STAY away from these. It did nothing but hurt him in the long run. Dump them and go with Sonlight or WTM or ??

Holly

Hurt him how? Was he just left to do them on his own with little instruction? Or was the information taught in a way that was wrong?

It didn't prepare him for public school. He was really behind when they switched to public school. He doesn't like their method of teaching which means you just use the booklets and move on to the next booklet. There are no teachings done when he went through them. He said that they do not teach critically at all. It is redundant and not necessarily a good education.

Ace is not for everybody, that's for sure, but for the most part they have been revamped and are not like the paces of old.

Literature and Creative Writing has been added for critical thinking and is usually a mandatory subject in most private schools.

We have happily used a subject here or there for years, but I have always been by my children's side reinforcing and going over anything that they didn't understand. In that aspect, I don't find them any different than a regular textbook, except that my child can write in these.

I do believe that there is a company, not sure if it's Alpha Omega, that produces a lifepac/pace type curriculum that is secular. Maybe it's worth looking into for someone whose religious beliefs don't align to this curriculum.

I'm curious like the other posters as to know what was offensive. Maybe it's something that can be brought to the publisher's attention.

Anyway, blessings on whatever you choose and decide to use. There is something out there for everyone. I could never ever ever do something like Sonlight, or Tapestry of Grace, so I totally understand when something just doesn't fit someone and their family.;)

I used ACE when I was in school and they didn't hurt me. Although they are not my pick of curriculum, they are sound. I personally wouldn't ditch them because you don't agree with some of their Biblical teachings because you will most likely find that problem no matter what curriculum you choose. And if you go with secular then you have to deal with evolution being taught as fact, reading about Merilan Monrow (sp??), and junk like that. If you like Paces eat the meat and spit out the bones. Just teach you child what *you* believe. You'll have to do that with anything you choose. :)

Thanks for elaborating. It sounds like the curriculum was not used in an effective manner which can be true no matter what you use.

My 10yo is using ACE PACES because he is very visual. His reading comprehension was not good and he was bogged down in grammar and math. They are working well to help him "break through" his barriers. We will use them at least until he is "caught up" (he is about 1.5 academic years behind) and then re-evaluate.

I don't like the Literature and Creative Writing PACES - to me they are just terrible! We are using Kolbe Academy's elementary literature and Writing Strands. I am also adding in Latin, Religion, and more in depth science/history as we have time. I am more interested in his getting caught up right now, so the "extras" take a back seat.

I don't consider it a rigorous curriculum and don't plan to use it for my other dc. This particular child is very, very different than most and my goals for him are different than for my other dc. He needed something "easy" to get past his feelings of inferiority. The English PACES do teach intensive grammar and the math will get you to Algebra. I can be happy with that!

It's designed for the student to do independently with the parent doing flashcards for math and basically checking that each page is done.

I do not agree with all of the doctrine. I love the character strips and Bible memory.

I wish they were not so expensive. :(

Their science and social studies are reading comprehension. They aren't worth the $ IMHO. This is true for just about any science/social studies curriculum for 3rd graders though! I think the library is much better!!!! :)For example they have a few paragraphs on Braille & sign language but this summer he read Out of Darkness and Story of My Life from the library.

My dc has been enrolled in Lighthouse Christian Academy (ACE umbrella school) for two years. I have been pleased with the service. They give us a report card, letter verifying enrollment, and the teacher is always available during business hours.

I really like ACE and use their math with my dd. :)

If I were to choose a full traditional curriculum from one publisher , they would probably be the one.

Not sure what the original poster doesn't agree with since so far I have just seen basic Christian teachings in the paces, but if it's serious differences, I guess it's better to switch.
