  1. Ds will be my second time around for hs'ing. For his older sister, my sole focus was getting her to read, and as a newbie, recreating "school" as much as possible. :001_rolleyes: Since ds does not appear to be as academically inclined as his big sister, and does not share her love of worksheets, I am thinking his Kindergarten should be a bit more relaxed. I was thinking about doing the WRTR with him, but it seems like quite a bit of writing -- so do I just do it really slow, or wait until 1st grade and a) focus on the sounds letters make or b) ignore phonics for K? FWIW, he is 4 now, with an August birthday.
  2. If you use WRTR starting in 1st grade, how many years would you continue in it. And when you are through with it, what do you use next? Pam
  3. I'm slowly learning the Spalding method here, and I have the 4th edition of the WRTR. I checked out the 5th ed from the library, and I liked how it fleshed out a few sections (handwriting, presenting phonograms, and even the Ayres list seemed more complete). I was thinking of actually getting it, cutting off the spines, and combining the two manuals (am I crazy?!). But I haven't been able to look at the 6th edition. What is the benefit of the 6th?? Ellie? Hunter? Anyone? Thank you!!!! :)
  4. I've got the WRTR on hold with my library....waiting for them to call me so I can pick it up!! I've been reading lots of threads about WRTR and it's making my head spin. Too much info overload for me to read it all! So.....I will have a 2nd grader and 5th grader that I will consider using it with. My rising 5th grader is using Phonetic Zoo and though I have seen a ton of improvement in her spelling, I still fill like she struggles a bit. We use the program to the "T".....no slacking here. Would WRTR benefit her with just learning the phonograms but still using Phonetic Zoo? For my 1st grader this year, we have almost completed OPGTR and I've been happy with his progress. We also use AAS and are towards the beginning of Level 3. I feel like it is more pieced than whole. I find myself going back a lot to the phonograms and to certain words that I thought he had already mastered. He is strong in reading and spelling.....but I wonder if I should make the switch to WRTR? I know "if it ain't broke"....WRTR seems like it is much quicker and to the point (but thorough) than AAS. Can anyone help me figure out if switching would be the best thing right now or sticking it out with AAS? Thank you!
  5. What is the easiest vertical phonics curriculum? Looking for something as open and go as possible to get a child caught up in reading (spelling improvements would be a bonus) as quickly as possible. Cheap would be nice too. I've read a lot of posts about Spalding's WRTR but I don't have time for the learning curve that seems to be involved with it. From what I've read, vertical phonics seems to be the fastest way to get children reading and providing them all the information needed to read about anything. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
  6. I saw there was a recent post about All About Spelling & The Writing Road to Reading. I wondered if I could get some more thoughts on them. I've been talking with some friends recently about language arts and these are two things they've recommended. Have you used it? What have you thought of it? How long does it take you every day? (The intro says 2-3 hours/day in a classroom setting!) If you've considered it but not used it, why not? Have you found your child able to do the writing portion? My 2 kids were ready to learn to read long before they were comfortable writing. Similarly, any thoughts on "All About Spelling"? If it helps you to know my situation, I have a second grader who is reading well, but he struggles to decode longer words and he's abysmal at spelling! We've been using Spelling Workout A & B, as recommended by The Well-Trained Mind, but I find myself continually wanting to be able to tell him a rule, and that curriculum doesn't take that approach. (By the way, if you know why TWTM recommends Spelling Workout, let me know, as right now I'm seeing more of its weaknesses than its strengths!) I'm feeling the need for spelling rules and also decoding practice. Hearing about The Writing Road to Reading's emphasis on spelling rules, phonograms, roots, etc. intrigued me. That said, it seems like a pretty intense program, so I'm wondering if All About Spelling would be a good compromise (another friend who gave up on Spelling Workout likes it), particularly given that my child's already reading. Thanks.
  7. I'm trying to purchase everything now and get ready and then have a few weeks "off" before we start school this year. Obviously all I really and truly need is the manual. I'm sure however there are things that help, right? Any particular notebooks? Games? I'm using it to teach dd reading & writing (and spelling obviously) for kindy this year and my 3rd grader will be using it just for spelling.
  8. Are there any forums or sites I should look at online? I (and four brothers and sisters) all were taught by Mom using Spalding. We all read very fast, and all but one of us can spell (!). I remember standing on a chair with Mom's arm behind my back, writing my phonograms on the blackboard in the kitchen. I can still recite the six sounds of "ough". But now, as I'm reading the WRTR she gave me, I'm drawing a blank on exactly HOW to conduct the lessons! Where do I start? What do I say? I can't believe I'm so stuck, but here I am. We're using OPGTR right now, and the next lesson will begin reading short vowel words, but I think I want Spalding's thoroughness, and my daughter has the fine motor skills to write. Thank you!

Hi, I've been reading on these boards for a few weeks and haven't found the answer to this question, so thought I'd post for once. ;D My girls are both reading delayed (7 and almost 9), but are making great progress with a current program we're using. The problem is that they were not making progress with traditional phonics based programs, so I finally switched to something mostly whole words based, which is helping them to actually start reading finally. I'm considering, now that they're starting to making progress with reading, doing some intensive phonics instruction over the summer. My older dd is dyslexic and has auditory processing problems, my 7 yr. old may or may not have dylexia, she seems more "normal" to me than my older daughter, she's just not focused (ADHD is very likely) and has little desire to learn to read. So, I want to continue with our current program, also do more phonics instruction with a better phonics program than I've previously used. I've seen great reviews of LOE and WRTR here, and just based on cost and track records, I'm considering WRTR. But I have no idea how to choose which level to start with. My girls would technically be 2nd and 4th this summer, and my 7 yr. old might be able to do the 2nd grade level, but I would think my older dd would be maybe at a 3rd grade level, or maybe just 2nd too (although she reads much better than my 7 y/o.) Is there a placement test?
  10. This question is about modifying WRTR or similar programs for a child who is not ready to write yet. Some background: I have a four-year-old daughter who is wanting to learn to read. She recognizes her letters and knows their basic sounds, she wants me to stop while we read and help her sound out the words, and she asks me to point out specific words after I read them so she can study them. If the text repeats the word she studied, she can usually point it out before I say it. Her new favorite game is to think of words that rhyme. She likes to make up songs, and most of the time she can think of rhyming lyrics. I don't have any experience with teaching reading, but these seem like signs that she is ready to read, or maybe it's just normal four-year-old development (she is my only child, so I don't really have another child as a point of reference). On the other hand, she has average fine-motor skills, so think it would be better to wait at least a year before I have her do any formal handwriting. I really like the Spalding method, and I think the WRTR (or perhaps PR, SWR, or the Logic of English) would streamline LA instruction, but I don't want to frustrate her efforts if her fine-motor skills aren't sufficient. On the other hand, I don't want her to develop bad strategies for reading (and eventually spelling) while we wait for her fine-motor skills to catch up with her desire to read. I don't really know the phonics rules well enough to explain them as needed. Can any of these programs be adapted by using magnetic letters or letter tiles? If not, what do I do with her in the meantime? She was interested in AAR Pre-K, mostly because of Ziggy the puppet (:001_smile:), but I can always just buy the puppet and use him for a different reading program, and I am beginning to think AAR Pre-K may be too much review for her. She really loves playing games, so if you know if any phonics-based games (physical games, not computer games) we can play independently from any formal instruction, that might hold her over until she's ready for any of the above programs. Thank you in advance for any advice you might have.
  11. From my searches on here, I think I've gathered that the 4th edition of the WRTR book is the favorite/most user-friendly? Most of the posts were from before the start of the year and when I was looking for the 4th edition on amazon, I noticed that as of January there's also now a 6th edition?! Is the 4th edition still the favorite? Any thoughts on the 6th? Also, having not yet read through the book, I am still a little confused by what it includes and what it leaves out. Will I need to do any other spelling program (AAS? Spell to Write and Read? etc.)? Grammar (would Shurley English be complementary or redundant?)? Phonics instruction (would Saxon Phonics be complementary or redundant?)? or does WRTR cover it all?
  12. I bought this book because we do Classical Conversations, and Leigh Bortins recommends it. I don't know how to use it! I'm so confused. Is it because there aren't really lessons in it? All I see are suggestions in it. And the suggestions seem to be out of order...and I'm just clueless. And I feel like I shouldn't be confused! I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, for crying out loud! This book has such great reviews, so why I feel like a complete idiot b/c I don't understand it. I think I'm going to put this book in the free pile at C.C. The best thing I can say about it is that it has a good list of recommended books for each reading level. Please tell I'm not the only person who doesn't understand this thing.
  13. Is there a list somewhere of all cursive programs - whether independent or part of another program? With a sick baby, I don't have time to search all over. Or can you list for me the ones you know of? I'm trying to compare the fonts to teach DS but I need a somewhat guided approach. I don't want to have to create my own worksheets, etc. Thanks.
  14. I have *just* begun WRTR this week with my 2 girls - an almost 6 yo & an 8 1/2 yr old. My 8.5 yo is what I would call a struggling reader. Both girls are currently working through The Reading Lesson We have been taking approx one week for each 'lesson' 5 yo is just over 1/2 way through the book, 8.5 yo is up to the last lesson. This is my question...having just begun WRTR, do I continue with the reading lesson for the 5 yo? I feel i have badly let down 8 yo - she cannot read fluently, so I am very nervous about letting my 5 yo down. Teaching her to read is a very different experience to teaching 8 yo to read. She picks things up much quicker. DD 8 is getting stronger, but, for example here is a sentence she tripped up over yesterday - "I like looking up at the night sky." the word that tripped her up? - 'at' how can that be????? Anyhow, looking forward to thoughts on WRTR. I think also my concern is that will i be able to get it all from the book - & not miss out key parts. My confidence is really shook. Thanks for reading.
  15. Do any of you fellow-homeschoolers have experience with either The Writing Road to Reading OR The Phonics Road to Reading/Spelling? I have a friend who swears by WRTR, but my understanding is that it is fairly teacher intensive (lots of prep. time?). I don't really know anything about PRTR/S, but sort of stumbled upon it in my research of WRTR. Any opinions, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Background: this is for my 6 yo son who is what I would call a beginning reader. We have been using My Father's World 1st grade curriculum and he is doing well, but I think he may need more practice/something a bit more thorough. Thank you! Carrie:001_huh:
  16. I know you are supposed to have your child write the spelling words in her spelling notebook, read the words, and compose original sentences. Is that all the review you did of the words? Did you test your child on the words like it says in the Teaching Different Grades chapter at back of the book?
  17. Can you tell me which one you chose, why you chose it, do you like it and where you would start with my youngest. She's finishing up Veritas Press' Phonics Museum and has a very good handle on phonetic sounds. She spells quite well too. She still needs work on dge, gh, and occasionally when to use tion vs sion. The basic rules are good. It's just the more complex ones, although she can read them well. So tell me what you love and where I should put her. Thanks Heather
