  1. As much as I've wanted Writing with Ease to work for us, DS10 still struggles with narration. (I still haven't figured out if it's attitude or aptitude.) I also have two younger students and a toddler, AND I'm not super confident in my ability to teach writing, so I thought Winning with Writing might be a good independent choice. So before I click Buy, I wanted to do one more survey of the Hive. I haven't found anyone who LOVES it. Has it worked for you? If so, please tell me DC's age and which level you use. Thank you in advance for saving our writing. :)
  2. I am teaching 5 children this year with a 2 year old running around. Grades: K, 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 9th. I'm trying to select a writing program for my 4th and 6th graders. Neither are natural writers. I'm absolutely positive that they both need incremental programs that show every single step. Unlike my 9th grader, they do not do well with more open-ended assignments. Here are my top three choices but I'm open to suggestions: 1. IEW 2. Winning With Writing 3. Excellence in Writing I am drawn to IEW b/c I could teach both boys at once and there is no grade level but it is expensive. WwW has a great pricetag and appears to be less teacher intensive but worries me that it might be busyworkish. Excellence in Writing looks more engaging that WwW and I love that I could reuse the levels with later kids but the grammar throws me off a bit. My 4th grader is focused, systematic and generally way above grade level in thought processes but absolutely h.a.t.e.s. the actually physical process of writing. If I were to take dictation he would give me a sentence like: The enormous tree was blocking my view and only pieces of the sky poked through. But if he were to write it: A big tree blocked the sky. A "fun" element helps him write much more on his own. My 6th grader is completely unorganized and a "rambler". He will write for days on his own with little to no organization. Despite having completed multiple books on outlining, he struggles. Graphic organizers work better for him by far. So two very different kids. Better to combine or not? Any gut feels on which program I should use?
  3. Has anyone used both of these or knows enough that could help me out? I do understand Winning with Writing is new and there are few that have used it for very long. But I need help and I am struggling to find a writing program. My 10 1/2 year old DD has had little writing instruction. I have failed her in many ways homeschooling (that is a different topic for another time), but we are both ready and willing to step up to the plate this year and work hard! Some of our struggles have been her being slow to pick up reading and trouble with spelling. Her reading is getting better and we now own AAS which I hope will help with the spelling and reading. She is a site reader, so I'm hoping that building the spelling through AAS will also make her a stronger reader. Because of these struggles she has also struggled with the WWE style. Dictation is difficult when we have to stop all the time to correct spelling. I would like to continue the WWE style of dictation and narration, but use it in our history and science like we normally would and not use the workbook. We are using FLL 4 right now and while she thinks it's boring, it is getting the job done. :) So, I am feeling like I really need a writing program to teach her how to construct a paragraph and get the basics of writing down. I feel like this would also help her feel more confident in writing longer narrations also. If you have stuck with me so far - Thank You! Has anyone seen or used both Writing Strands or Winning with Writing? I was going to go with WS, but then just discovered WWW today and I am now torn. We haven't used workbook style curriculum in the past because of her reading, but I think she may now like a few options like that. I think we would both like the idea of her doing some more independent work in the style of a workbook to guide her along. I would also appreciate any advice on to what level you think we should start. She understands types of sentences and subject, verb, adv. adj. because of our grammar work. But she really has no idea on paragraphs or more complex sentences. Thank you so much for listening and any advice you may have. Angel
