  1. I asked this question on the GB, but thought I would ask here in case any of you don't read the GB forum. I am getting ready to develop a lit yr based on LOTR for my rising 9th grader. We will be using LLfLOTR, but this particular child is an advanced student that loves to analyze literature and language (she actually sees herself as a linguist one day). She has asked that we go beyond LL and learn about how Tolkien created LOTR and the works that influenced him. Since I am not a serious Tolkien fan at this kind of level (I am a fan, but a reading fan, but not a "tackling all things Tolkien" type fan), I was hoping that maybe someone on here might have some insight. I have already read and own, Kreeft's Philosophy of Tolkien and Pearce's Tolkien: Man and Myth. So those we will read, but that is not what she is asking for. I am wondering if the History of LOTR http://www.amazon.co...=A2M4Z83ZJUHG3D would be what she wants? Or Letters of Tolkien http://www.amazon.co...d=ATVPDKIKX0DER She also wants to incorporate The Silmarilliion and some of the Unfinished Tales. This part gets my head spinning b/c I don't know what order we should read things in. And, do we read the Unfinished Tales or should we read Children of Hurin or The Book of Lost Tales, etc? Any insight that may be offered would be appreciated. She really wants to understand the process that he went through as an author to create the work he did. Thanks!
  2. My oldest daughter is deeply in love with LOTR and the Hobbit. My husband has been reading the books aloud to her over the last few months and she eats, breaths and lives the stories. She has started wearing her furry boot slippers (hobbit feet) and hooded bathrobe in the middle of summer so she can be more like a Hobbit. I bought her this set of CDs to feed her obsession and she has been listening to it non-stop for weeks now. It is very well done and it has added an extra dimension to the story. As a nice bonus, she has now memorized quite a few of the poems from the book by listening to it.   3. I go through this debate in my mind every year but as my children go up in the grades, it seems more difficult to resolve. The two that concern me most right now are my 11yr olds. They are advanced 3-4 yrs in reading. Most of their readings from this past year consisted of works from 9-10th grade reading lists. They both love to read and they seem to comprehend not only the surface material but deeper characteristics of the stories, though at their age, I have to introduce the discussion and then they are able to bring forth the details. I guess my internal debate comes from remembering my public schooling, sitting in lit class and painstakingly tearing the stories apart for every little piece of meaning. (honors and AP level classes). I loved to read. It wasn't something I really minded and I found it relatively easy, but looking back I question whether it was necessary... Do I have a better understanding of lit today because of those courses? Do I read books differently now than if I didn't have that background? So, for those who have already been there or are going through it now - how much do we need to "teach" in literature? Is this something that natural readers will just develop in their own time or is it something that truly has to be taught? Do I need to begin setting lesson plans for specific story analysis (guided or independent) or will the simple discussions we have about the meaning, history, setting of the texts be enough to guide them in their own development? And how much of this is needed in terms of college preparation?

  6. I've been wondering about this for some time now and have searched some online for this, but I haven't found what I'm looking for yet. I may need to create this on my own... My dds are both obsessed with Tolkien right now. I would love to use this natural interest and allow some of their enthusiasm to transfer into writing assignments. My younger dd let me read some more of her creative writing which is very good and Tolkien-inspired too!:D We started discussing what we might do for her upcoming change in grammar/writing curricula. She shared with me that she would love to have writing assignments that used Tolkien's writings. So, I have three questions... 1. Does any curricula exist that uses Tolkien as a model for writing assignments? I do have Killgallon's Sentence Composing for Elem. and one for Middle School, but these focus on the sentence level only. This will be great, but I'm looking for assignments involving paragraphs and more too. 2. If this doesn't exist, would anyone be willing to share some potential ideas for writing assignments for my 8th grader? 3. The same question as #2, but for my 2nd grader? (She writes well above her level. I say this not to appear as if I'm bragging. This is just where she is, and it mystifies me too.:D I'm not sure I could put a grade level on it, but she absorbs writing in a way I've never seen before. My degree is in education so I have seen the typical levels for all grades from 1-6. Her sentence structure is amazing and she has picked up punctuation naturally.) Any suggestions would be great!!
  7. My dd is already loving the LOTR series by Tolkien. She is interested in more of his books. I would love to pick up a couple for Christmas for her. Does anyone have any favorites that I might consider? She is reading/learning the "elvish" language online. I might like a book for that too, if that exists!:lol: Thanks!
  8. We've had a few threads on the topic of why reading fiction is worthwhile, especially if it is a worthy passtime for Christians. I've been listening to a series of lectures on J. R. R. Tolkien from iTunes called The Tolkien Professor. The lecture "How to Read Tolkien and Why" spends about ten minutes discussing Tolkien's view of the role of an author as sub-creator and how this reflects truth even when it is completely made up. Tolkien especially felt that a story didn't have to be a specific allegory (like The Chronicles of Narnia) to reflect creation and truth. The comments by the lecturer, Corey Olsen, are really interesting. I think that he is pulling from several sources, but especially Tolkien's essay On Fairy Stories (which seems to be found in The Tolkien Reader). I thought that this would be of interest considering how often we discuss what books are worthy of reading and why.
  9. I came across these awhile ago and downloaded them. They look pretty good with great questions, vocabulary, extra reading, etc. I may use it for literature in the next year or two. Anyone else use it or think it might look good?
  10. I'd like to spend the rest of the year in an in-depth Hobbit/LOTR study with my 8th grader. I'd like something that more than just comprehension questions and something that will help guide me with the symbolism, meanings etc. I know there is the 'Literary Lessons in LOTR' but that does seem like alot of comprehension questions and it's pretty pricey. If it has alot more, I'd like to hear about it. What other options are there for high school level studies of these? Has anyone used Kolbe guides? I'm not Catholic - I'm Protestant - but I am considering joining a Greek Lit group next year that will use Kolbe so I thought maybe trying it out ahead of time might be good. Other options? Heather
