  1. Has anyone tried to substitute a full Geometry or Algebra 2 course with the Thinkwell Essential courses? Am I crazy to consider it? Algebra I bogged us down, and he wants to be an engineer. We would use the pared-down Thinkwell Essentials geo and alg 2 courses so that we could get to the Precalcus course by the end of 11th grade and then slow down and go through that course slowly, taking time to understand concepts, using Khan to help with concepts as needed. What do you think of that idea? What are your best ideas for getting through both Geometry and Alg
  2. We are starting Thinkwell Geometry in a few weeks. I've seen some posts on the forum that suggest it needs supplementation, while others say it doesn't. Would I need to supplement for a mathy student on an engineering/computer path? Would it be helpful to buy the Holt textbook to use as extra practice? If so, are there any solutions in the book or is there a solutions manual available? Are those in the One Stop Planner?
  3. So... ds is enjoying the lectures & doing ok but even taking notes & printing out a copy of the lecture notes he does not have enough info on some subjects. It seems some of the lectures are either moving very quickly or anticipating a higher level of background info than he has. I think he'd benefit from a good text that he could use to read along with the lecture topics. Anyone have a favourite? If there's something that people love as a good primer at this level - does not have to be full curriculum because it would be just to supplement the lectures - , pls chime in & tell m
  4. My rising ninth grader completed Bridget Ardoin's Physical Science in 7th, FLVS Earth and Space Science this year, and is in the middle of their Biology class. She will be in PreCalc next year. She really enjoys on-line classes to which we add hands-on labs, projects, & extra readings. Do you think that Thinkwell Chemistry sounds like a good fit for this kid? I was thinking of adding CK01A Chemistry kit to it to give her hands on labs. The price of both of those together would be less than doing FLVS for the year, and it sounds like it would be a higher level chemistry. What do you t
  5. Ds is using Thinkwell's chemistry course. If he skips the chapters that are omitted in the AP version (ch. 23, 25 and 26), does anyone know if the final exam is "smart" enough to substitute questions from those chapters with other material he has done, or does he have to do all of the chapters in order for the final to be relevant? I've sent the same question to Thinkwell; I'll post here if I hear back from them. Just trying to plot out the last few weeks of the year! Thank you!
  6. Ds is taking Thinkwell Chemistry this year - the regular college level class, not the AP class, since he is not taking the AP exam and also because, looking at the topics covered, the regular course covers more than the AP course. I know that without taking the AP exam score he won't be able to get AP credit at college, but I am wondering what to call the course on his transcript. Can I still call it AP Chemistry, since it covers the same topics, or should I call it Honors Chemistry or something else? The table from the Thinkwell FAQ page (http://www.thinkwellhomeschool.com/how-it-works) seems
  7. I'm primarily a lurker here but I pick up a lot of good advice... so I checked out Thinkwell this year and thought it looked good for my 6th grader who has been doing Math Mammoth for the last couple of years and previous to that, the old BJU. Math is not her strongest subject and we have had much frustration with MM so I thought it was time to move on. In comparison to MM, Thinkwell is ridiculously easy unless I'm missing something. We are getting into the intro to Algebra now but it still doesn't seem to require any "thinking" at all, just a few very straightforward questions. We're d
  8. Thinkwell offers Algebra 2 as well as Pre-Calculus. They advertise the pre-calc as "A 2-in-1 value: Thinkwell's Pre-Calculus combines the course materials from Algebra 2 with Trigonometry". Could someone please enlighten me? Aside from the pace being accelerated, what disadvantage is there to skipping algebra 2 and jumping into their pre-calc course? I have a bright, motivated math student who will finish the requirements for algebra 1 and geometry in a few months. He has also dabbled in trigonometry. We were considering algebra 2, but now I'm wondering if he could jump right into TW'
  9. I thought I had read posts from people who had used it and gone on to take the exam, but now I can't find any of those and wonder if perhaps I dreamt it. ;) I'd love to know if it really is stand-alone, or if one must supplement (and, if so, with a full textbook course or simply with an AP prep book).
  10. Hi, Can anyone help me figure out the economic courses that Thinkwell offers? It appears that Sonlight's economics that uses Thinkwell is using Thinkwell's economics course that is listed under student available courses on their web site. Thinkwell also lists the macroeconomics and microeconomics courses under the student list of courses available. Through the homeschool buyers co-op Thinkwell's micro and macro economics are both available, but each is a semester class. The course listed as just economics is not offered. Does anyone have experience with any of these courses? What wou
  11. Would you all tell me about Thinkwell biology? It doesn't look as frequently used as other DVD teaching, but I think I like it. I'd be interested to find out: the difference between AP and regular biology what biology text I could use with Thinkwell (if I just used the CDs) How it compares to other high school biology courses (Campbell's, Miller-Levine, etc...) Pros? Cons? Where am I going with this?...... So many use a secular text in order to cover evolution topics. I'm really curious IF a Christian text (like Science Shepherd.... very interested in this one) could be used while i
  12. My dd is taking Geometry in public high school, and I purchased the ebook version and coordinating DVD lectures through Amazon Marketplace. It turns out that the textbook author and professor on the DVDs is Edward Burger, who does math lectures for Thinkwell. So I looked at the Thinkwell website and the chapters totally line up with the Holt geometry book. SO this now becomes a Chalkdust-for-less kind of option. You could buy the Holt Geometry textbook or eBook (a LOT cheaper!) and the lesson tutor DVDs (currently out of stock but I paid $4 for a brand new sealed set), as well as the solut
  13. Hi All, I'm new to the forums but have certainly learned a lot. I know chemistry has been discussed a lot and I've read thru many old posts. But I would appreciate any advice you could give me. I'm trying to choose a chem curriculum for my dd for next year (she'll be in 9th). We've hs'ed for 4 yrs and I don't think I've ever had this much trouble choosing a program. Dd is a very science-y, tech type. She did Apologia physical science in 7th and Apologia biology in 8th and made A's fairly easily. We're looking for something other than Apologia for chem. She's finishing Dolciani Alg 1 as
  14. Has any of our Thinkwell users have used "only" the CD lectures? How effective are they? I cannot engage in an online class, does this means we cannot use Thinkwell? I am all:bigear:. Thanks in advance for your time in replying.
  15. I am looking into secular biology options for an advanced 8th grader. I have an instructor lined up for biology labs at a local community college, but am looking for the course material. I want a high school level course, but I am wary of going with just a textbook since he will be self-studying most of the course material and meeting with a class once a month for the labs. If I were to choose a textbook, I would probably go with Cambell's Exploring Life. I was wondering about Thinkwell (since Homeschool Buyer's Co op has it for 45% off.) What level is Thinkwell Biology? Is it a com
  16. So someone on a local list recommended thinkwell and told us about the discount available on the homeschool buying coop. Since that didn't have much description, I went to the website and saw that the programs were listed as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, etc. Are these really AP? I am looking for programs for my very auditory high schooler who has difficulties with memorizing things if she reads them but has an excellent auditory memory. Next year we plan on doing biology but since she isn't planning on going on to science degrees, I don't think AP is necessary at all. On the other hand, they
  17. I've said a few times this year that I've been disappointed in Foerster's Algebra 2 and that it's been a big struggle. So I've been looking at some other programs. I was all set to buy one of the video programs when I remembered one of my friends (whose son majored in some kind of engineering in college) suggested I look at Bob Jones, because it is rigorous. So I was able to see Bob Jones Alg. 2 in person today and I bought it. I spent a few hours with it this afternoon, working random problems and mapping out the rest of our year. Here are my impressions about some differences between t
  18. In a recent thread on Apologia Biology you mentioned you use the Thinkwell Biology lectures with Dr. Wolfe. I'm looking at the Thinkwell website at a set of CDs for Biology for $25 -- two questions: 1. Are the CDs usable on a Macintosh computer, or PC/Windows/Vista only? I can't seem to find the technical details for the CDs anywhere on the website. 2. Can you just purchase the CDs as a stand alone item? You don't have to purchase the $100+ one-year access to the whole Biology program? THANKS in advance! Warmest regards, Lori D.
  19. I've seen a couple of posts where people said that they bought the Thinkwell cd's to supplement a program. I can't find any to buy anywhere: Amazon, etc. So how did you do this? Christine
  20. I read of some folks using the ThinkWell lectures independent of the course subscription, but the site is not allowing me to purchase only the lectures... wants to charge me $300 for the entire course. could someone lend me their magic wand please? How did you get the lectures cds ONLY? I found the hotmath site for lower-level math vids, and chalkdust publisher for higher level math vids... but i want at some of the science vids ... pleeeze holp -sarah
  21. Great stuff. I'm wondering if I should cough up the green and do the Homeschool Buyers Co-Op group buy for $70 for 1 year. How important are the graphics that accompany the lectures on the web-based program? Are the printed materials and tests necessary if we are doing the EL tests? Thanks, gang. You must all be weary of my Biology angst of late... :)
  22. For those of you who have used these resources, can you tell me how much time it took daily (assuming you finished it within a normal year?)? We're looking at: Thinkwell Physics Thinkwell Chemistry Thinkwell Calculus Thinkwell Microeconomics and/or Macroeconomics (she enjoyed economics so we thought that may be a nice follow up) Keystone AP Physics B Keystone AP Computer Science A Keystone AP Art History Keystone AP World History Keystone Calculus (but they have it broken into AB and BC..we considered EPGY or TW so as to do Calc I and II in the same year though that isn't ne
  23. If you're using Thinkwell, do you remember what you paid? I signed up two of my dc for Thinkwell about a month ago, and I seem to remember paying just under $90 each. Today I went to sign up my 3rd ds, and the rate was listed as $219! When I called Thinkwell, the operator told me that the rate had recently gone up for the homeschool version, but couldn't tell me about pricing because the sales rep. was out of the office. Could it really be that Thinkwell raised their prices to more than double? Or am I just remembering the price wrong from before? ~Julie~
  24. They are both video lecture programs with online quizzes and tests available. After 15 minutes of poking around their websites, I cannot see a great deal of difference between the two programs. I would love to hear any feedback from folks who have used either one. I am looking specifically at biology, but hearing how pre-calculus or any other subject went for you would be very helpful to me! Thank you!
